Setting the Scene

  • The Buckeyes are set to open the much anticipated 2016-17 regular season on Friday against visiting Duquesne.
  • Tip-off is set for Noon from St. John Arena.
  • The Buckeyes are ranked in the top-10 of every preseason poll. OSU is coming off a 26-8 campaign that saw it make its first run to the NCAA Sweet 16 since 2011. The Buckeyes welcome three of the nation’s top transfers as well as three incoming freshmen who were ranked in the top-31 of the class.
  • Duquesne is coming off a year in which it won the A-10 regular season title, was 28-6 and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. The Dukes are led by Preseason All-Conference selections Kadri-Ann Lass and Amadea Szamosi.

Noting The Buckeyes

  • The Buckeyes return three starters and eight letterwinners from a team that made the programs’ first NCAA Sweet 16 appearance since 2011.
  • Ohio State is ranked in the top-10 of every preseason poll including No. 7 in the AP poll and No. 6 in the coaches poll.
  • Kelsey Mitchell was named an AP Preaseason All-American. Mitchell broke the school record for points in a season in each of her first two seasons and was named the Big Ten Preseason Player of the Year.
  • Kevin McGuff enters his fourth season with the Buckeyes and his 15th overall as a head coach. He has a career record of 322-136 (.703) and 67-37 (.644) with the Buckeyes. McGuff led Ohio State back to the NCAA Sweet 16 last season, marking the second NCAA Sweet 16 appearance of his career.

Noting Ashland

  • Duquesne was picked to finish second in the A-10 this season.
  • The Dukes finished the 2015-16 season tied for the regular season title with an overall record of 28-6 and 13-3 in league play and was runner-up in the A-10 Tournament.
  • DU earned an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament where it advanced to the second round with a win over Seton Hall.
  • This season, the Dukes are led by Preseason All-Conference selections Kadri-Ann Lass and Amadea Szamosi.
  • Lass averaged 11.2 points per game last season and led the team with 64 blocks. Szamosi scored 11.5 points per game and grabbed 7.6 rebounds per contest.
  • The Dukes are led by head coach Dan Burt who has won at least 20 games in each of his first three seasons at Duquesne. He owns an overall record of 71-30.

Series History vs. Duquesne                           

  • The Buckeyes and Dukes are meeting for the seventh time on Friday.
  • Ohio State leads the all-time series 5-1 but Duquesne won the most recent meeting 71-67 on Dec. 28, 2010 in Columbus.

McGuff vs. Duquesne

  • Head coach Kevin McGuff is 10-2 all-time in games against Duquesne.
  • All 12 of the games came while he was the head coach at Xavier, another member of the A-10.
  • McGuff has won nine-straight against the Dukes with the most recent meeting coming in 2011.

History In St. John Arena                     

  • St. John Arena is one of the historic venues in college basketball.
  • The Buckeyes began playing in St. John Arena in the 1974-75 season and have an all-time winning percentage of .802.
  • OSU has won 264 games and has lost just 65 in parts of 28 seasons in the arena.
  • Friday’s game will be Ohio State’s 330th in SJA. The Buckeyes won three games in the arena last season — a 106-47 win over Wagner in the regular season, an 88-69 victory over Buffalo in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament and then an 88-81 triumph over West Virginia in the second.
  • Since moving its home games to Value City Arena prior to the 1998-99 season, this will be Ohio State’s 26th game in St. John Arena.
