COLUMBUS, Ohio – Sophomore Cammi Prantl and junior Taylor Watkins combined to go 6-for-7 with three RBI and four runs scored as Ohio State blanked Purdue, 8-0, on Saturday afternoon at Buckeye Field. With the win, the Buckeyes are 20-19 overall and 6-5 in the Big Ten while Purdue falls to 21-20-1, 8-3 in the Big Ten.
In addition to Prantl and Watkins’ hot bats, senior Melaina Saalfeld also went 2-for-2 with a RBI. Senior Evelyn Carrillo and sophomore Jayla Saibene each had a hit and an RBI. In the circle, junior Olivia O’Reilly picked up her team-leading ninth win of the year, tossing five innings while surrendering just two hits while striking out three.
After a scoreless first two and a half innings, Ohio State jumped out on top with three run in the bottom of the third on four hits and one Purdue error. Watkins started the rally with a single to left field and Prantl drove her home with a double to right center. Saibene then singled, scoring Prantl, and she was eventually drive home on a Saalfeld single.
Ohio State tacked on another run in the fourth inning, once again ignited by Watkins and Prantl, who had back-to-back singles. Watkins would come around to score on a throwing error by Purdue’s third basemen, making the score 4-0.
The Buckeyes put an end to the game in the fifth inning by scoring four times, the biggest hits coming off the bats of Watkins and Prantl, who each had RBI singles. The game ended on a fielding error by Purdue’s right fielder, allowing two runs to score.
O’Reilly sat the Boilermakers down in order in two of the five innings she pitched. She lowered her ERA to 2.29 and now leads the team with 68 strikeouts.
Ohio State and Purdue will play the rubber game of their three-game series tomorrow at 1 p.m. at Buckeye Field.
