COLUMBUS, Ohio – It was a business as usual Monday for the Ohio State Buckeyes outside of the first coast to coast total eclipse of the sun to cross the United States in 99 years and the first Associated Press college football poll being released with Ohio State ranked No. 2 nationally.
The team practiced just over two hours at the Woody Hayes Athletic Center. It was an August practice so it was hot. Real hot. It was hazy sunny. And it was humid.
And it was a Monday, so that meant coach Urban Meyer held a post-practice press conference in front of a huge throng of reporters and writers. And not to throw shade, but this crowd eclipsed all other fall camp media day crowds at Ohio State this year. Probably because we’re 10 days from the season opener, Aug. 31, at Indiana.
Meyer said that practices now are all geared toward prep for the Indiana game. He also said the team wasn’t “great” yet, but he likes where the team is at. Meyer also addressed:
Position battles …
“Boundary safety is down to Erick Smith and Jordan Fuller. Right guard has not been determined yet. And kicker, the young guy, Blake [Haubeil] is a pretty good player. Right now Sean [Nuernberger] is ahead of him, but not by a very far margin.”
Kevin Wilson, the play-caller …
“He goes quick. He spits plays out real fast. He and Ryan Day work very good together. I like where we’re at. We’ve done more unscripted plays than we ever have for that purpose. I’ll just throw the ball down second-and-one, third down and six, on purpose. They can’t look off a sheet. They have to call plays. Done a very nice job.”
The re-emergence of DT Tracy Sprinkle …
“We’re going to announce captains tonight. I anticipate that he’ll probably be a captain. That’s how much he means to this team.”
The back-up quarterback situation heading into Indiana …
“We’ll have a plan. It’s not been finalized yet.”
