COLUMBUS, Ohio – The No. 2 Ohio State women’s ice hockey team wrapped up a weekend of non-conference play at the D1 in D.C. tournament with a 4-2 win over Penn State on Saturday night at the MedStar Capitals Iceplex. The Buckeyes went undefeated in the tournament to improve to 14-2-0 on the year while the Nittany Lions finished 1-1 on the weekend and fall to 8-6-2 overall this season.
How it Happened
Sophie Jaques started Saturday’s game the same way she finished Friday’s game – with a goal for Ohio State. The senior capitalized off the Buckeyes’ first power play opportunity of the evening 11 minutes into the game. Clair DeGeorge added another goal just 24 seconds later to give the Buckeyes a two-score advantage at the first intermission.
Penn State capitalized on two late-first period penalties by the Buckeyes with a goal in the opening minute of the second frame. Jaques restored Ohio State’s two-goal lead with another power play goal at 5:14. Jenn Gardiner added the team’s third power play goal and final score of the game with 1:05 to play in the period.
The Nittany Lions scored their second goal of the day in the third period in an effort to stage a comeback, but the Buckeyes maintained their lead to earn the win.
Buckeye netminder Andrea Braendli recorded her eighth victory of the year as she backed the Buckeyes to the 4-2 result over the Nittany Lions. She earned 30 saves against Penn State.
