Ohio State 91 (14-4, 5-0 B1G), Maryland 69 (14-4, 3-3 B1G)
Jan. 11, 2018
Value City Arena – Columbus, Ohio
Attendance: 12,014

Chris Holtmann, Ohio State head coach

On the first ten minutes of the game
“I want to give Maryland a lot of credit. I thought they came out with a terrific plan and they came out kind of ready to shrink the floor on us and take away some options. They really came out basically saying ‘hey, we’re going to roll with Cowan and Huerter’ and we expected some of that. I thought they were way more physical and tougher than we were in the first ten minutes, but our guys responded.”

On his message to the team during the timeout early in the game
“Well, what I can say publically is we’ve got to play harder. We have to act like we care a little bit on the defensive end and if you don’t, a team like Maryland, with their guard play and their ability, its going to be a long night.”

On the unconventional lineups tonight
“We’ve never played some of these lineups that we played in this game and I didn’t necessarily go into it thinking we were going to play these lineups. I say that I had a passing thought that we might play some of these lineups but the game kind of required it.”

On his biggest takeaway from the game
“We had so many great moments, but Andrew Dakich gave us a lift there in the first half. He was a game changer in a lot of ways.

Andrew Dakich, Ohio State graduate guard

On helping the twelve-point lead in the first half
“I have to give the credit to the other guys on my team. We attacked and they were just able to find me. They over helped if anything because I am I am usually not a high-volume shooter. Being able to knock those shots down was a great feeling.”

Keita Bates-Diop, Ohio State junior forward

On Dakich’s performance tonight
“We knew he could shoot. In practice, he is one of the best shooters. In the game he usually plays his role well. Today, we really used him and he made the shots that he usually makes. I am not really surprised.”

Jae’Sean Tate, Ohio State senior forward

On coaches’ changes after being down seven at the beginning of the game
“Defensively we weren’t playing up to our standards. We were not guarding the ball and we were not pressuring them. Coach Holtmann is all about his defense. Our defense transitions to how well we play on offense. I think that time out got to us and we got it going right after.”

On being 5-0 in the Big Ten and if it comes as a surprise

“I think we are 5-0 because of our approach – our approach every day in practice, our approach pre-game. We always remind ourselves that we were last picked in the Big Ten and no matter if we are 5-0 we are going to continue to play with that chip on our shoulder and I think that has really been a key to our success.”

On this year’s team

“This team is selfless. We love each other on and off the court and I think that is a big key as to why we are 5-0.”

Mark Turgeon, Maryland head coach

On tonight’s game
“I thought Ohio State was terrific, especially from about the ten-minute mark in the first half until they didn’t have to give everything. They made a lot of shots and we can’t seem to guard anybody on the road all of a sudden. They are playing with a lot of confidence right now, obviously, and we were limited on some things. But we didn’t compete the way that we have to compete. That was the disappointing thing.”

On the team
“We don’t have a lot of depth. We are starting guys that should be bench guys and we are playing guys who should not be playing right now. But that is where we are and we need to get better. We didn’t compete hard enough tonight to get better.”

On trying to catch Ohio State confident coming off the Michigan State win
“We did. We had a nine-point lead. But they are so talented and very confident right now that they erased that. That nine-point lead went away. We went from up nine to down eight in about three minutes. We knew we weren’t getting the same shot that Michigan State got at the start of the game. But with that being said, Ohio State was really good tonight, again.”
