Thad Matta, Ohio State head coach
On the improvements in the game tonight
“The biggest thing for us is that we’re making some strides in the right direction. I think that the guys did a really good job of understanding what we were trying to do. They had some incredible shots. I thought we played with more intensity and more intelligence.”

On Ohio State’s offensive options
“This is one of those teams where I don’t know who is going to be the leading scorer before the game. I think that it is kind of a good thing. What we have to get to is when everyone is hitting their stride every time we hit the floor.”

On whether the game was a loss or step forward
“I think it is a little bit of both. I thought that we competed more tonight. We had more of a purpose to what we were trying to get accomplished in terms of what Virginia was trying to do and in terms of what we were trying to take away. I think we’re still making small mistakes though and those are things we have to get corrected. Those small things are making huge difference.”

Marc Loving, Ohio State forward
On the close loss
“It’s bittersweet. It’s bitter because we lost but it feels good to know that we’re getting better each and every game to the point where we’re able to compete with top-10 teams. We’re just taking each day in practice to get better and prepare for our next opponent.”

Jae’Sean Tate, Ohio State forward
On the progress of the team
“I definitely think we’ve gotten better every week … it just seems that all of our games come down to the wire. We’ve got to figure out ways to bring it home. We’re so close. That just comes with being tougher and taking care of the ball.”

On the morale of the younger players
“We just have to let them know that there’s no looking back now, there’s nothing we can do [about the losses] … We can’t worry about how our record looks, we just have to go into the next game and play with the same intensity as we did today, but just a little smarter and a little harder.”

Tony Bennett, Virginia head coach
On preparing to face Ohio State
“We knew coming into this ACC/Big Ten challenge that it would be a good atmosphere. Thad Matta is a heck of coach and what Loving did tonight was impressive. We haven’t gone against a team that is able to block shots like that yet.”

On winning without London Perrantes
“It was an opportunity to show that we are a legitimate veteran team with depth. It showed tonight against a team that is talented but not a veteran team.”

On Virginia’s defense tonight
“We pride ourselves on being a defense first team. You may be out of position and slow to close out, but if you hustle you can find yourself getting in some plays. And tonight we had just enough.”
