Ohio State Notes

Mike Nugent connected on a 55-yard field goal attempt at theend of the first half to tie his personal record, which was a55-yarder to win the game over Marshall earlier this season. The55-yard kick also tied the Ohio Stadium record for longest fieldgoal by a Buckeye, which Nugent shares with former Ohio State placekicker Dan Stultz (1996-2000). Stultz made his 55-yard kick againstIndiana in 1997. In 1981, Morten Andersen of Michigan State made a63-yard kick in Ohio Stadium.

For his career, Nugent now is 6-for-7 from beyond 50 yards, including three 50-plus FGs this season. Overall, Nugent is 53-of-61 the past three seasons.

Nugent converted on 2-2 of his field goal attempts Saturday toup his career total to 60 field goals, which surpassed Stultz (59)for the most career field goals at Ohio State.

Nugent has attempted 14 field goals this season for a career total of 75 attempts, good for the No. 3 spot all time behind Tim Williams (49-77, 1990-93) and Dan Stultz (59-91, 1996-2000).

With his two field goals and an extra point, Nugent now has 301career points, a total that moved him into third place all-time inOhio State scoring. Nugent’s seven points moved him past RichSpangler (1982-85 – fifth place), Vlade Janakievski (295 points infourth, 1977-80) and Keith Byars (300 formerly third, 1982-85). Theschool record of 348 points belongs to fullback Pete Johnson(1973-76). Stultz (1996-2000) had 342. Ted Ginn, Jr. scored on a65-yard punt return in the first quarter, marking his first careercollegiate touchdown on his second career punt return attempt. The65-yarder is the longest of his career, topping a 12-yard returnearlier in the season. Ginn’s 65-yard return served as the longestpunt return of the season for Ohio State, besting the 63-yardscoring return by Santonio Holmes at Northwestern this season. OhioState has returned a punt for a touchdown in each of its last twogames.

Ginn, Jr. is the first freshman to score on a punt return since Donte Whitner scored on a blocked punt return vs. Iowa last season.

Ohio State entered the game with Wisconsin ranked No. 18 by theAP. Overall, Ohio State’s mark when ranked by the AP is 377-120-14.

Wisconsin served as the first Top 25 team Ohio State faced this year. The loss dropped the Buckeyes to 14-5 against Top 25 teams under head coach Jim Tressel since the beginning of the 2001 season.

The 24-13 loss Saturday snapped Ohio State’s 18-game win streakat home. The Badgers are the first team to defeat the Buckeyes athome since Illinois downed Ohio State, 34-22, Nov. 17, 2001.

The 18-game home win streak had served as the second longest in the country behind Boise State’s 22-game string at home.

The loss also dropped Tressel to 22-3 at home at Ohio State.

With the loss, Tressel’s career mark stands at 170-66-2,including a 35-9 record at Ohio State. The loss Saturday toWisconsin, coupled with the defeat last week at Northwestern, marksthe first time Ohio State has dropped back-to-back games in theTressel era.

The last time Ohio State lost consecutive games was the 2000 season when it ended the season with a 38-26 loss to Michigan at home and a 24-7 defeat to South Carolina in the Outback Bowl under John Cooper.

For the 95th consecutive game, Ohio State scored at least onetouchdown. The last time a Buckeye team was held without atouchdown was a 13-9 loss to Michigan in the 1996 season. With theloss, the Buckeyes own an all-time Big Ten record of 414-159-24.Under Tressel, Ohio State dropped to 19-7 in Big Ten play.

Ohio State – Wisconsin Series

Saturday marked the 72nd meeting between the Buckeyes andBadgers in a series that dates back to 1913. With the defeat, OhioState still has a 50-17-5 lead in the rivalry, including a 27-7-3record in Columbus. Since 1980, the series now is deadlocked at5-5-1 in the last 11 games. The Buckeyes came into the contestranked No. 18 by the AP and Wisconsin was ranked 15th. In theall-time series, Ohio State now is 7-3-2 when both teams areranked. Overall when Ohio State is ranked, the Buckeyes fell to31-11-3 against the Badgers and 18-4-1 in Columbus. With the loss,Jim Tressel fell to 1-3 against Wisconsin and 0-2 vs. the Badgersin Ohio Stadium.

Ohio State Offensive Player Notes

Freshman tailback Antonio Pittman raced for 43 yards in thesecond quarter for a career long. The play topped his 38-yard runin the season opener against Cincinnati. Pittman’s run is thesecond longest this season by Ohio State, falling behind a 68-yardgain by Lydell Ross against Cincinnati.

Pittman ended the game as Ohio State’s leading rusher with 48 yards on four attempts.

Pittman also hauled in his first career reception in the third quarter, a 16-yard gain.

Santonio Holmes’ 9-yard catch in the first quarter extended hisstreak of games with at least one catch to 11. Holmes ended thegame with 34 yards, a team best, on three catches,

Holmes also set a career-best with a 32-yard kickoff return in the second quarter.

Senior split end Roy Hall set a career-high with five catchesSaturday. His previous best was three receptions vs. Marshall. Hallended the day with 25 yards. Sophomore quarterback Justin Zwickscrambled for 22 yards in the first quarter, marking a career long.Zwick’s previous career-long gain was 18 yards at Northwestern.

Through the air, Zwick finished the game 15-of-31 for 125 yards, his second straight game with more than 30 attempts.

In the second quarter, Zwick punted for the second time this season, a 24-yard kick. Zwick booted a 32-yarder against Marshall this season.

Freshman tight end Rory Nicol made his first start of hiscareer Saturday.

Ohio State Special Teams

Senior Kyle Turano pinned the Badgers inside their 20-yard lineon three occasions Saturday. For the season, eight Turano puntshave been downed inside the opponent 20-yard line.

Ohio State Defense Notes

Wisconsin’s Anthony Davis rushed for 168 yards on 39 carries tobecome the first opposing player to gain 100 yards rushing in agame at Ohio Stadium since San Diego State’s Larry Ned’s 112-yardperformance Oct. 20, 2001, a span of 21 games.

As a team, UW rushed for 184 net yards, the most since Kent State ran for 171 yards against the Buckeyes Sept. 7, 2002.

A.J. Hawk established a career best in tackles for a thirdoccasion in the last four games with 20. Hawk had 14 stops atNorthwestern last Saturday and 12 tackles vs. Marshall Sept. 11.Hawk also forced a fumble.

Fellow linebacker Anthony Schlegel had nine stops, his most as a Buckeye. Schlegel had 19 tackles while at Air Force against Notre Dame in 2002.

Sophomore safety Donte Whitner set a career-high with 17 tackles, which topped his previous best of 12 tackles set last week at Northwestern.

Fellow safety Nate Salley added 12 halts, also a career high. Salley’s previous best was 11 tackles at Michigan last season.

Six different players recorded a tackle for loss in the gamefor Ohio State, including Mike Kudla and David Patterson, who eachrecorded a sack Saturday, marking their first sacks of the season.
