Ohio State’s score on a 1-yard touchdown run by Lydell Ross inthe first quarter marked the fourh time this season the Buckeyeshave scored on their opening possession of the game. Touchdownswere scored against Northwestern, Indiana and Penn State with afield goal coming against Iowa. The six minutes, 59 seconds chewedup on Ohio State’s first quarter scoring drive was the longest timeof possession on a scoring drive this season. Craig Krenzel’sfourth down run (4 yds.) that kept Ohio State’s first quarterscoring drive alive and Scott McMullen’s 2-yard third quarter runon fourth down were the Buckeyes’ seventh and eighth fourth-downconversions in 11 (.727) attempts this year.

Ohio State Defensive Team Notes

The Ohio State defense has allowed just 24 first quarter pointsthis season following PSU’s TD. The Nittany Lions’ score was justthe third first quarter TD allowed by the Buckeyes on the year.Ohio State has held it’s last two Big Ten opponents, Indiana (-12)and Penn State (33), to 21 yards rushing.

Ohio State tailback Lydell Ross rushed for 110 yards on 24carriers against the Nittany Lions. He has rushed for 100 or moreyards in back-to-back games and four times as a Buckeye. He ledOhio State with 167 yards rushing against Indiana last week.Freshman wide receiver Santonio Holmes caught his third pass ofmore than 30 yards in the last two games with a 38 yard grab thathelped the Buckeyes during the third quarter scoring drive. Allthree 30+ receptions in the last two games were thrown by backupquarterback Scott McMullen. He finished with four catches for 58yards against the Nittany Lions. Ohio State flanker/ defensive backChris Gamble started at both cornerback and flanker for the firsttime this season and since Ohio State’s win over Miami in the 2002National Championship Game. Senior quarterback Scott McMullenentered the game to start the third quarter and engineered an80-yard, 12-play scoring drive to close Penn State’s lead to 17-14.After Penn State hit a field goal to make it 20-14, McMullen ledthe Buckeyes to a score on OSU’s final drive of the game to pullout the victory. He finished with 12 completions on 17 passingattempts for 112 yards and two touchdowns. He has completed 17 of22 passes for 223 yards and three TDs in the last two games. Withhis 4-yard TD catch in the third quarter, Ohio State split endMichael Jenkins has now caught at least one pass in 35-consecutivegames. His TD catch with just over a minute to play, a 5-yarder, inthe game was the deciding factor.

Ohio State Defensive Player Notes

Senior defensive end Will Smith recorded a sack in the secondquarter to give him 22 for his career, one shy of Eric Kumerow’scareer total of 23 from 1984-87. Junior Dustin Fox recorded histhird interception of the season in the third quarter. He has sevenpicks for his career.
