All four are OSU Scholar-Athletes and have combined for nearly 300 games played
COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State hockey coach Steve Rohlik announced today that seniors Austin Pooley and Grant Gabriele along with juniors Quinn Preston and Gustaf Westlund will captain the Buckeyes for the 2020-21 hockey campaign. Pooley, an alternate captain last season, will wear the captain’s “C” on his jersey this season with the other three the alternate captains.
“These are four young men who are outstanding leaders for us on and off the ice,” Rohlik said. “Each is an OSU Scholar-Athlete and collectively they have combined to play nearly 300 games for us. The coaching staff is incredibly proud of all four of them, and for their families.”
Pooley, a forward from Dublin, Ohio, was the first central-Ohio native to be named a captain last year when he was an alternate, and now he has the distinction of being the first captain from the region. A two-time AHCA Scholar-All-American and Academic All-Big Ten honoree, Pooley has played in 110 games for the Buckeyes, including all 36 last year when the Buckeyes finished 20-11-5 and tied for second in the Big Ten Conference.
Gabrielle, a 6-2, 197-pound defenseman, also played in all 36 games for the Buckeyes last season and contributed four goals and nine assists for 13 total points. From Brighton, Mich., Gabrielle also had 46 shot blocks last season to rank second on the team, including six in a pair of one-goal victories over Michigan in early November. He is a veteran of 60 Ohio State games.
Preston has played in 69 of 72 games the past two seasons and has 20 career goals, 20 assists and 40 total points. The Trenton, Mich., native was one of the Top 5 goal scorers in the Big Ten in 2019-20 with 15 goals (T4th), including three game-winners, to go along with 11 assists. He was named a Big Ten Conference Distinguished Scholar last season in addition being an AHCA Scholar-All-American.
Westlund, from Stockholm, Sweden, becomes the first European to wear a captain’s letter for the Buckeyes. Westlund was tied for first in the Big Ten and was Top 10 nationally with four game-winning goals last year among his 12 tallies. He also contributed 14 assists for 26 total points. Westlund enters his third season with the Buckeyes with 45 career points off 17 goals and 28 assists and he has played in 59 games.
