Columbus, Ohio — Ohio State head coach John Cooper today named Fred Pagac and Jon Tenuta as head coaches for Saturday’s Scarlet and Gray Football Game at Crew Stadium.
Pagac will coach the 26-man Scarlet team, comprised of the Buckeyes’ first-team offensive and defensive units. Tenuta will coach the Gray squad, made up of the remainder of the team.
The Scarlet staff also includes Jim Heacock, Tim Salem and George Belu. Tenuta’s assistants are Chuck Stobart, Bill Conley, Tim Spencer and Brian Williams.
“We are a young team and I felt it was best to keep the first-team together,” said Cooper. “I think it will be a confidence builder for them. But we will do some switching around and look at some other combinations.
“The main thing in the spring game is for the players to have fun and avoid injuires. We have been pretty lucky this spring in terms of injuries. Hopefully, we can get through Saturday and then turn our attention to the fall.”
In addition to incumbent Steve Bellisari at quarterback, redshirt freshman Craig Krenzel will be on the Scarlet squad. So will tight end Tim Cheatwood, who is the backup to Darnell Sanders.
Derek Combs will start at tailback for the Scarlet and Jamar Martin, who, along with Combs, has had an exceptional spring, will be the fullback.
“We have been very impressed with Jamar Martin,” said Cooper. “He is the complete package. It has been awhile since we have had a fullback who can do the things that he does. He just runs over people.” The Scarlet defense features cornerback Nate Clements, the Buckeyes’ leading returning tackler (90), and tackle Mike Collins, who had 11 tackles for loss last year. Heath Queen will start at the other tackle, filling in for Ryan Pickett, who is sitting out spring ball after undergoing shoulder surgery.
Scott McMullen will be the signal caller for the Gray team. McMullen, like Krenzel, is a redshirt freshman. After a slow start because of a finger injury, the 6-4 McMullen, who prepped at nearby Granville, has played very well the past two weeks. So, too, have a pair of promising young freshman receivers — split end Drew Carter and flanker Ricky Bryant. Both of the latter would like nothing better than to play their way into the wide receiver rotation this fall.
Jerry Westbrooks will start at tailback for the Gray and another central Ohio product, Jesse Kline of Upper Arlington, will get the nod at fullback. Both have had solid springs. Up front, freshman Adrien Clarke has had a productive spring at right tackle and will get a long look from Cooper and offensive line coach George Belu.
On the defensive side of the ball for the Gray, end Joe Brown (moved from tackle at the start of spring practice) and linebackers Pat O’Neill, Matt Wilhelm and Fred Pagac Jr., all freshmen last year, will have the job of slowing down Bellisari, Combs, Martin and the rest of the Scarlet attack.
Saturday’s kickoff is at 1:30 p.m. Tickets, available through Ticketmaster and at the Athletics Ticket Office at the Jerome Schottenstein Center, also will be on sale Saturday morning at Crew Stadium.
The Ohio State band will perform before the game and at halftime. There will be a 45-minute autograph session following the game.
