COLUMBUS, OhioRobert Sessley (So., Columbus, Ohio) has been chosen as one of the representatives from the Big Ten Conference when it squares off with wrestlers from the Ukraine in the Big Ten All-Star dual meet May 23 in University Park, Pa.

Sessley, along with Michigan State’s Pat McNamara, will wrestle in the 132-pound weight class. One of the wrestlers he will square off against is Oleksandr Zaharuk, who has won a gold medal at the European Championships for the past three years. He also placed fourth in the 1997 World Championships and is a gold medal hopeful for the 2000 Olympic Games.

Sessley burst onto the national scene this year, winning 35 matches and finishing eighth at the National Championships, earning All-American honors in the process. He kept alive Ohio State’s streak of having at least one All-American every year in the 1990s.

The team leader in nearly every statistical category, Sessley put together one of the greatest single-season turnarounds in Ohio State wrestling history this year. After redshirting his first season as a Buckeye, he won only one match last year, but served notice this year would be a different story when he won eight of his first 10 bouts on the way to a 35-16 season.

The Big Ten wrestlers will have their hands full with the Ukraine, one of the top wrestling countries in the nation. The Ukrainian team will consist of university age athletes, many of whom have had success on the international level and are Olympic medal hopefuls.

The competition will take place Sunday, May 23, at 7 p.m. in the Bryce Jordan Center on the campus of Penn State University. The competition will give the Big Ten wrestlers a chance to branch out from collegiate-style wrestling. The All-Star dual meet uses freestyle.
