Upper Arlington, Ohio, native Bo Hoag shoots one of four final rounds under par to tie for 10th
EAST LANSING, Mich. The Ohio State men’s golf team led the field in scoring during the final round at 4-over 292 to finish tied for sixth Sunday at the 2008 Big Ten Championships with a four-round total of 1196 (+44) on the par 72, 7,013-yard Forest Akers Golf Club’s West Course in East Lansing, Mich. Freshman Bo Hoag fired one of four final rounds under par to finish his first Big Ten championships tied for 10th. Michigan State won the tournament on its home course with a score of 1173, edging second-place Minnesota by four strokes.

Ohio State tied for sixth with Northwestern and the two teams were two shots back from fifth-place Michigan. Indiana was fourth with a team score of 1183, one stroke behind Illinois in third.

“I’m happy with the way we competed today,” Jim Brown, Ohio State head coach, said. “We were hoping to do a lot better this week, but we didn’t chip and putt well, and on a course like this that’s what it boils down to. We had a good final round. I hope it will be good enough to get us into the NCAA regionals.”

Leading the Buckeyes during the final round was Hoag. The Upper Arlington, Ohio, native opened with a double-bogey on No. 10 and was 3-over through nine holes, but had an outstanding stretch after the turn. He had five birdies in the next eight holes before bogeying his final hole to get back under par for a final of 71 (-1).

“I had a bad start, doubling No. 1, which set me back 2-over to start the round,” Hoag said. “After making the turn, I regrouped and started fresh. I had a target on each hole and hit it there. It wasn’t anything in particular; I happened to get it close to the holes. I had an up-and-down on No. 16 that was one of my best ever. That was big.”

Combined with his earlier scores of 75-74-77, Hoag tied for 10th at 9-over 297 for the highest finish by a Buckeye in the event. He tallied three of his final-round birdies on par 5s to tie for second in par 5 scoring at 9-under.

“It’s a good feeling,” Hoag said on his finish. “When I teed up for the first round, I wanted to win. It’s nice to cap off my first Big Ten championships with a good round. It’s something to build off of.”

“Bo has been consistent all year,” Brown said. “He had a great round today and the way he played the back nine helped out the team. I look forward to having him around for three more years.”

Vaughn Snyder came back strong from his third round of 83 with a final round of 72. Starting on No. 10, the junior from Massillon, Ohio, was 1-over on his first nine and 1-under after the turn with three birdies and three bogies. Snyder concluded the tournament with a total of 298 (+10) to tie for 13th place.

Also firing a final round of 72 and tying for 13th at 298 was senior Kyle Coconis. The co-captain from Zanesville, Ohio, wrapped up his round by birdying his last two holes and totaled six birdies during his final 18 holes.

Freshman Brad Smith closed out his first conference championship with a 77 to combine with his previous rounds of 79-74-76. The native of Peru, Ind., placed 34th at 18-over 306.

Senior Zach Sebert struggled through his first nine holes at 6-over, but rebounded after making the turn with 1-under and four birdies for a final round of 77. The Grove City, Ohio, native finished 53rd with a total of 319.

The Buckeyes now await the announcement of the NCAA tournament field May 5. The three regionals will be held May 15-17 in Bremerton, Wash., Chattanooga, Tenn., and Ohio State’s own Scarlet Course in Columbus.
