FAIRBANKS, Alaska – The Ohio State men’s hockey team tied Alaska Fairbanks, 1-1, Saturday at the Carlson Center. Freshman Dan Knapp scored the lone goal for the Buckeyes in the first period and the Nanooks tied the game with less than five minutes remaining in regulation.
The Buckeyes record moves to 1-1-1 overall and 1-0-1 in the CCHA. (1-0-0 CCHA). UAF goes to 1-2-1, 0-1-1 CCHA. The series was the first league action for both teams. OSU won the opener, 6-3, Friday.
OSU got on the board with just 52 seconds left in the first period. Daymen Bencharski passed the puck to Dan Knapp at the side of the net, who put the puck past UAF goalie Lance Mayes for his third goal of the weekend. R.J. Umberger also assisted on the play. The Buckeyes outshot UAF, 15-12, in the period.
The teams were scoreless in the second period. The Buckeyes put 14 shots on net in the stanza and held UAF to just seven.
The Nanooks tied the game with a goal by David Keogh at 15:43 of the third period. There was no scoring in overtime. OSU had four shots on net in the overtime and held UAF to none.
The Buckeyes put a season-high 43 shots on net in the game, with UAF goalie Lance Mayes posting 42 saves. OSU goalie Mike Betz had 29 saves on 30 Nanook shots.
OSU was scoreless on the power play and held the Nanooks scoreless on all four of their opportunities.
The Buckeyes return to action at 7:05 p.m. Friday (Oct. 25) against Clarkson in their home opener in Value City Arena. OSU and Clarkson will end the series at 3:05 p.m. Sunday (Oct. 27).
