OSU Hall of Famer June (Brewer) Daugherty Dies

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State Athletics Hall of Fame inductee June (Brewer) Daugherty has passed away at the age of 64. Daugherty played at Ohio State from 1975-78, leaving her mark as a Buckeye long after leaving Columbus.

The two-time captain helped lead Ohio State to the Big Ten Championship in 1977 and 1978. She continues to hold the program’s career record in field goal percentage, wrapping up her career at 500-of-805 (.621), and the program’s single-game block record (12 vs. Michigan State on Feb. 7, 1976). Daugherty ranks 28th in scoring all-time at Ohio State, totaling 1,137 points during her 99 games in the Scarlet and Gray. She’s sixth all-time in career rebounds (829) and the only player to total at least 650 rebounds in less than 100 games.

Daugherty played and coached internationally for several teams for five years before coming back to the states to coach. She began her collegiate coaching career as an assistant at Kent State from 1983-85. Before becoming a head coach, Daugherty also made a stop as an assistant at Stanford where she helped lead the Cardinals to a 28-3 record, an undefeated Pac-10 season and an NCAA Tournament appearance in 1989.

Daugherty earned her first head coaching position at Boise State, where she spent seven seasons from 1989-1996, amassing a 122-75 record and guiding the program to an appearance in the NCAA Tournament. She earned a 191-139 record at Washington as she led the program to six NCAA Tournament appearances, most notably an Elite Eight berth in 2001, during her 11-year tenure.

Daugherty concluded her coaching career at Washington State, leading the program to a 130-217 record from 2007-2018. She took the Cougars to three postseason WNIT appearances, including the 2017 semifinals after earning the first postseason victory in program history.

Daugherty was a long-time member of the Women’s Basketball Coaches’ Association and a former member of its Board of Directors. She served on the selection committees for the State Farm Coaches’ All-America Team, Russell Athletic/WBCA Coach of the Year and WBCA All-America Region 8.
