COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State synchronized swimming team put a wrap on a great weekend by celebrating former swimmer Jessica Beck with a victory at the event named in her honor, the Jessica Beck Memorial Meet.
The Buckeyes scored 93 points and distanced themselves from Michigan (48 points), Miami of Ohio (34) and Wright State (12).
“This meet is always a special one for our team, especially having Jessica Beck’s family and so many alumni here to share it with,” said head coach Holly Vargo Brown. “Overall, I’m pleased with our performances today and am looking forward to getting back to work in the pool on Monday morning.”
Saturday was the first time the home fans were able to catch a glimpse of the Buckeyes’ team routines and they were not disappointed. The Scarlet squad, which included Morgan Boneberg, Elizabeth Davidson, Wenjing Deng, Lorraine Hack, Alyssa Hoying, Noelle St. John, Stephanie Thielemann and Monica Velazquez-Stiak, enjoyed a solid opening performance on Saturday. Scarlet finished with a score of 85.8333. The Gray team of Alexa Aton, Tori Baron, Renee Collett, Jessica Giannuzzi, Natalie Huibregtse, Alex Meredith-Le Roux, Jasmine Pulido and Lizzie Walsh had a good performance as well, posting an 83.0667.
Baranski also finished first in each of the short routines on Saturday. She bested her first performance in the solo routine from the OSU Invite, scoring an 87.3333. She joined Velazquez-Stiak to win the duet at 85.1667 and then that pair also won the trio with Elizabeth Davidson at 84.8000.
The Buckeyes also took the second spots in the both the duet and trio competitions. Hack and Hoying topped their score from the OSU Invitational by a tenth of a point to take second at 82.8667. They then finished runner-up in the trio with Morgan Boneberg with a score of 80.9833. Sarah House, Amrian Johnson and Lizzie Welzien swam an honorary routine and posted a score of 74.2333.
The Buckeyes will head out on the road for the first time this season when they travel to Virginia for a pair of competitions next weekend. On Saturday, OSU will swim at Richmond and then follow that meet with another performance at William & Mary on Sunday.
