COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State rifle team posted a score of 2311 in smallbore on the opening day of the 2017 NCAA Championship on Friday which are being hosted by Ohio State at the French Field House. That score has Ohio State in sixth place in the eight-team field.

“I think it was a pretty good day for us. The 2311 has us in sixth place but only six points behind Alaska in fifth,” said head coach Ryan Tanoue. “Coming into this weekend, we were aiming to get into the top-5 and that goal is absolutely still out there for us. Air rifle throughout the season has been our strength. Smallbore has been kind of up and down and today was a pretty average day so we’ll take that. I think the team for the most part is relatively pleased. We’re looking forward to shooting the air gun tomorrow and I think the confidence will be there. I’m hopeful that we’ll have a good day.”

Junior Drew Cheezum, shooting in his third-straight NCAA Championship, led the team with a 581. That matches his average for the season and is his best score since tying the school single-match record of 590 in back-to-back matches in mid-January.

Sophomore Michael Steinel followed with a 579 which continues his solid run of scores. Steinel has topped his season average (576.6) in each of his last four smallbore competitions. Freshman Jacob Buchanan also bested his season-average on Friday with a 577 while fellow freshman Rhiann Travis checked in with 574. Junior Mark Matheny rounded-out the Buckeye five with a 571.

Defending champion West Virginia leads the competition after the opening day with a smallbore score of 2336. TCU is close behind at 2334 and Kentucky is third at 2331. WVU’s Morgan Phillips and TCU’s Rachel Garner tied for the best individual score on Friday with a 589 and Phillips then had a tremendous individual final, running away with the title by 4.5 points over teammate and defending champion Ginny Thrasher.

Saturday’s air rifle competition will begin with Relay 1 at 10:15 a.m. Relay 2 is set to begin at 12:15 p.m. with the individual finals at 2:30 p.m.
