PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. – Caden Orewiler opened his collegiate career with a bang, firing a 3-under in his first round as a Buckeye. The freshman from Caledonia, Ohio lifted himself near the top of the individual leaderboard at The Carmel Cup, owning a share of fifth place in the 48-player field heading into Round Two on Saturday (Sept. 3).
Orewiler attacked Pebble Beach to the tune of five birdies while minimizing his mistakes with just a pair of bogies. He sits above eight players ranked inside the Golfstat Top-100 and is even with No. 99 Chelso Barrett (TCU).
Two fellow newcomers, freshman Jeg Coughlin III and sophomore transfer Daniel Wetterich, are also in the Buckeye lineup for the season-opening event. Coughlin III contributed to the team tally with a 74 (+2), settling in at T-36th on the individual leaderboard. Wetterich dropped in an eagle on his second hole donning the Scarlet & Gray before ultimately concluding the day at 8-over (80).
Lineup veterans Josh Wick and Will Grimmer came in at No. 2 and No. 3 among Buckeyes. Wick shot even par (72) on the strength of two ‘Back 9’ birdies. He is tied for 22nd overall through 18 holes. Grimmer picked it up on the ‘Back 9’ as well, going 1-under in the second half of his day after posting three bogies on the ‘Front 9.’ At 1-over (73) for the round, he is tied for 36th.
Addison Coll chipped in Ohio State’s fifth score in the ‘play 6, count 5’ format. His 5-over 77 is good for a piece of 44th place overall.
