COLUMBUS, Ohio— The No. 9 Ohio State women’s rowing team took on No. 11 Virginia and No. 12 Duke Saturday with No. 4 Michigan also racing in Columbus against the same ACC squads in an ACC/Big Ten Regatta at Griggs Reservoir.
Ohio State’s three teams that qualify for postseason competition, the first varsity eight, second varsity eight and first varsity four, finished 4-2 on the day. The first varsity four was 2-0 while each of the eights split their races.
In the morning session the Ohio State first varsity eight won a close battle with Duke, winning by less than a second. The Blue Devils (6:51.6) jumped to a sizeable lead but the Buckeyes (6:50.8) slowly battled back for the win.
Ohio State’s first varsity four also was the winner over Duke with a winning time of 7:53.4 over the 2,000 meter course. The Blue Devils posted a time of 7:59.1.
Duke took the second varsity eight race with a time of 7:00.6 ahead of the Buckeyes (7:03.2).
The Buckeyes also defeated the Blue Devils in the first novice eight, the third varsity four and the second varsity four races in the morning session.
In the afternoon, Ohio State’s second varsity eight along with the first varsity four posted victories over No. 11 Virginia.
Ohio State raced its second regatta of the season and first at home. The Buckeyes traveled to Camden, N.J., last weekend to face Princeton and Brown. For results from that event, go HERE.
This is the third season under the direction of head coach Kate Sweeney, who guided the Buckeyes to a sixth-place finish at the 2021 NCAA Championships and to a second-place finish at the Big Ten Championships last year.
