Columbus, Ohio – Stephanie Blanton, a junior forward/guard on the Ohio State women’s basketball team, will represent the Buckeyes in the 2005 Big Ten Women’s Foreign Tour July 17-27. The league office announced the 12-member team Thursday, which will play five games during the trip. Three of the contests will be held in the Netherlands, while a pair of games will be played in Belgium. Penn State’s Rene Portland will serve as head coach of the team.
Blanton, from Lancaster, Ohio, was the fourth-leading scorer for the Buckeyes in 2004-05 at 5.2 points per game. She also ranked second on the team in rebounding with 3.3 per contest, while averaging 19.5 minutes a game. Blanton started all five of Ohio State’s postseason games last season and tied her career high with 12 points in the Buckeyes’ win over Holy Cross in the first round of the NCAA tournament.
To open the tour, the Big Ten squad will match up against the Netherlands national team for a three-game set, starting July 19 in Dan Helder, Netherlands. The second game of the series also will be played at Dan Helder July 20 before the teams head to Amsterdam for the finale July 21.
Belgium serves as the host for the final two games of the trip. The Big Ten and the Belgium national teams tip-off in Aalst, Belgium July 23 before the Big Ten faces Luxembourg in Brussels July 25.
Last year, Ohio State’s Jessica Davenport helped the Big Ten team to a 4-0 record on the 2004 Foreign Tour.
