Columbus, Ohio – The Ohio State wrestling team (1-3, 0-0 Big Ten) completed Session I at the 2004 Midlands Championships in Evanston, Ill. Wednesday afternoon. The Buckeyes, who advanced 133 T.J. Enright, 197 J.D. Bergman and HWT Kirk Nail to the quarterfinals, stand in 12th place overall. Northern Iowa leads the field after the first session with 34.5 team points.

Enright, the No. 6 seed at 133, gained his bid to the quarters with a pair of decision wins following a first round bye. Enright, a freshman from Galloway, Ohio, scored a 6-4 decision in sudden victory overtime before notching a 6-2 win in the third round to set up a quarterfinal match with No. 5-seed Sam Hiatt of Northern Illinois. Enright defeated Hiatt earlier this season en route to his 133-pound title at the Michigan State Open.

At 197, No. 2-seed Bergman tallied his third fall of the season in the first round and then impressively downed his second-round opponent by a 14-2 major decision to set up a quarterfinal bout with No. 10 Matt Delgyud of host Northwestern. Bergman, a sophomore, is seeking his second tournament crown this season.

Nail, a freshman from Grandview, Ohio, used a pair of decision wins by 3-1 and 3-2 counts to earn a slot in the quarters vs. No. 5-seed Bill Stouffer of Central Michigan.

Several Buckeyes won their first round matches, but fell into the consolation bracket after second-round losses, but remain alive for Session II this evening. Falling into the category are Ryan Needle and Steve Wollery at 149, Keegan Muller at 157, Zach Craiglow at 165 and Nathaniel Augustson at 174. Also competing as an open competitor is Ohio State assistant coach and 1998 NCAA champion Mitch Clark. Wrestling in the 197 bracket, Clark joins Bergman as a quarterfinalist with a 9-5 decision in round two and a fall in the third round. Clark won the Midlands in 1998.
