PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – After a long weekend of fencing, the Buckeyes finish 3-4 at the Philadelphia Invitational. The women’s squad contributed two wins while going 2-2 on the day. The men also picked up a win for the Buckeyes.
ROUND ONE
Ohio State started the day on a high note. The women’s squad outlasted NYU in all three weapon categories. The foil unit defeated the Bobcats 5-4. Sophomore Gabriela Cecchini went 3-0 against her opponent. The sabre unit also won their bout, with Sarah Merza and Aleksandra Kolmykova going undefeated. The epee unit clinched an impressive nine victories over the Bobcats. Eva Petronchak, Alexanne Verret and Emma Von Dadelszen all went undefeated.
The men’s squad also edged out NYU picking up their sole victory of the day. Both the epee and sabre units defeated their opponents 7-2. Matthew Comes had three victories over his competition for the epee unit. For the sabre unit, both Domenik Koch and Hudson Santana went 3-0. The foil unit also put points on the board for the Buckeyes with a victory from James Hu.
ROUND TWO
Both the men’s and women’s squads were outlasted this round. The men’s squad was edged out 17-10 against Yale and the women were narrowly defeated by Temple, 15-12. Cecchini and Verret both went undefeated for a second time for the Buckeyes.
ROUND THREE
The women picked up their second win of the day in against UPenn. Both the epee and foil units won their bouts. Cecchini and Rivano of the foil unit went undefeated leading the Buckeyes to a 7-2 victory.
ROUND FOUR
In the final round of the day, Ohio State fell to Columbia. Another dominating performance by Verret helped the team narrow the score against their opponent.
For the men’s squad, Santana and Oliver Shindler both went 2-1 against their opponents for the round.
NEXT UP
The Buckeyes are set to host the last home competition of the season. The Midwest Fencing Conference Championships will be held at French Field House February 23-24.
