COLUMBUS, Ohio- The Ohio State women’s tennis team opened play in the ITA Midwest Regional Championships Thursday in East Lansing, Mich. Play began with the 64-player singles qualifying draw with the final eight advancing to the main draw. Three Buckeyes won in the first round, but fell in round two.

Angela DiPastina (Fr., Titusville, NJ./Hun School of Princeton) won her first match of the day, 6-4, 6-3, against Elise Montrose of Bradley. DiPastina was matched against Jenna Nussbaum of Bowling Green in the second round, but dropped that match in three sets, 3-6, 6-0, 6-1.

Also winning her first match was Julie Voss (Fr., San Angelo, Texas/St. Stephens Academy). Voss defeated Hanna Hager of Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne by a score of 6-3, 6-3. Voss came up short in the second round by dropping her match with Kerstin-Beeke Pahl of Western Michigan, 3-6, 6-1, 6-2.

Emily Howard (Sr., Akron, Ohio/Walsh Jesuit) came from behind to win her first round match, 5-7, 7-5, 6-3, over Jennifer Pollack of Ball State. When faced against Ashley Morris of Bradley, Howard came up short with a final score of 6-3, 6-3.

Falling in the first round were Ciara Finucane (Jr., Dublin, Ireland/Georgia Southern) by a score of 6-1, 6-1 to Stephanie Kebler of Michigan State, and Kristin Messmer (Jr., Lutherville, Md./McDonough), who lost a close match to Shivani Dave of Illinois, by the score of 6-4, 6-4.

After losing in the first round of the qualifiers, Messmer and Finucane rebounded in the consolation bracket. Messmer shut out Kim Jenson of Butler, 6-0, 6-0. Finucane defeated her opponent, Rachel Janssen of Valparaiso, 6-2, 6-2.

Singles action in the main draw opens Saturday with Buckeyes Caitlin O’Keefe (So., Troy, Mich./Troy), Julie Blackmore (Fr., Fort Lauderdale, Fla./Cardinal Gibbons) and Sonia Ruzimovsky (Jr., Brooklyn, NY./Brooklyn Technical) competing. The ITA Midwest Regional will continue play on Friday as the 64-team doubles main draw begins. The Buckeyes will have four teams competing. Ruzimovsky and DiPastina, Blackmore and O’Keefe, Finucane and Messmer, and Howard and Voss will all represent the Buckeyes.
