COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State women’s tennis team (13-8; 3-3 Big Ten) was defeated by No. 30 Indiana, 4-3, Sunday. The loss is the fourth time this season the Buckeyes have been edged by one point. The match was held at the Stickney Tennis Center in Columbus, Ohio.
The Buckeyes took one doubles match but dropped the doubles point to Indiana. At No. 1, the tandem of Caitlin O’Keefe (So., Troy, Mich./Troy) and Julie Blackmore (Fr., Fort Lauderdale, Fla./Cardinal Gibbons) were defeated by Sarah Batty and Laura McGaffigan, 8-3. At No. 2, Angela DiPastina (Fr., Titusville, N.J.) and Sonia Ruzimovsky (Jr., Brooklyn N.Y./Brooklyn Tech) were downed by Sigrid Fischer and Brianna Williams, 8-3. At No. 3, Ciara Finucane (Jr., Dublin, Ireland/Georgia Southern) and Kristin Messmer (Jr., Lutherville, Md./McDonogh) topped Marah Calvo and Cecile Perton by the score of 8-6.
In singles, at No. 1, Ruzimovsky defeated Batty, 6-4, 6-1. At No. 2, O’Keefe downed McGaffigan by the score of 7-5, 6-2. At No. 3, Blackmore defeated Williams in three sets, 4-6, 7-5, 6-3. Finucane fell to Fischer, 6-2, 6-3, at the No. 4 spot. At No. 5, Messmer was downed by Alba Berdala, 2-6, 6-2, 6-4. At No. 6, DiPastina was defeated by Perton, 6-4, 6-3.
The Buckeyes will be back in action April 15 when they host the Michigan Wolverines. The Buckeyes will then close out the home season schedule when they host the Michigan State Spartans April16. Both matches will begin at 11 a.m. at the Stickney Tennis Center. In the case of inclement weather, the matches will be held at the Jesse Owens West Recreation Center in Columbus.
