Columbus, Ohio – Ohio State wrapped up its regular season schedule falling to both Iowa, 161.5-137.5, and Northwestern, 168-131, in Iowa City, Iowa Saturday. Despite the losses, the Buckeyes had six overall winners in the double-dual meet.
Nicole Maglich (Jr., Sarasota, Fla./Sarasota) recorded two first-places finishes against both Iowa and Northwestern. Maglich out-raced the other swimmers in the 200-yard freestyle event with a season-best time of 1:50.98. Her second win of the meet came in the 500-yard freestyle when she touched the wall in 4:55.01. Maglich finished second in the 200-yard butterfly, closely behind teammate Gulsah Gunenc (So., Edirne, Turkey/Edirne Anatolian). Gunenc out-reached all competitors, clocking a time of 2:02.63. Gunenc also won the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 57.50.
Griet Buelens (Fr., Kapelle, Belgium/Ursulinen Mechelen) recorded a double-dual win in the 1,000-yard freestyle (10:17.47). Buelens also had three second-place finishes throughout the individual meets. Against Northwestern and Iowa, Buelens claimed second in the 100-yard freestyle, while against Iowa, Buelens followed Gunenc to a second-place finish in the 100-yard butterfly. Rebekah Rychvalsky (So., Sydney, Australia/Castle Hill) won two events against Iowa, placing first in both the 100- and 200-yard breaststroke, only out-raced by Northwestern’s Brielle Bovee.
Buckeye diver Julie Broms (So., Springfield, Ill./North Central) won the 3-meter board with a score of 303.95. Broms was followed by Anesa Beard (So., Franklin, Ind./Franklin Community) in third place on the 3-meter event. Broms also claimed the 1-meter event against Northwestern, and placed second against Iowa with a score of 277.70. The Buckeyes will return to action in two weeks for the 2005 Big Ten Championship in Bloomington, Ind. Feb. 16-19.
