COLUMBUS, Ohio The Ohio State women’s swimming and diving team fell to the No.15-ranked University of Southern California, 126-113, Friday at the McDonald’s Swim Stadium in Los Angeles. With the loss, the Buckeyes fall to 1-3 on the season.

“I feel pretty good about how we finished,” Jeanne Fleck, head women’s swimming coach, said. “There were a lot of great individual times for us today. For us to swim against one of the best teams in the country and to do so well was something that we really needed.”

The Buckeyes came away with two first-place and five-second place finishes. On the diving side, Ohio State swept the top two places in the one- and three-meter events.

Freshman Anita Beck and the 400 freestyle relay squad of senior Annie Rennebohm, Beck, freshman Maggie O’Brien and freshman Samantha Cheverton recorded first-place finishes for the Buckeyes. Beck finished with a season-best time of 2:03.69 in the 200-yard butterfly, while the relay team recorded a time of 3:30.02.

The divers were led by freshman Bianca Alvarez, who took first in both the one- and three-meter events with scores of 326.63 and 324.00, respectively. Junior Chelsea Davis took second in the one-meter (302.55), while freshman Kristen Asman placed second in the three-meter (289.95).

Several Ohio State swimmers recorded season-best and NCAA cut times in the meet. In the 200 freestyle, Cheverton swam a season-best and NCAA “B” cut time of 1:49.81 to finish second. Freshman Katelyn Brix also had a season-best time of 17:03.32 in the 1,650 freestyle for third.

Sophomore Colleen Schweitzer picked up a second-place finish behind USC’s two-time NCAA champion Rebecca Soni in the 200 breaststroke. Schweitzer’s time of 2:16.92 was a season-best, as well as an NCAA “B” cut time.

“Colleen’s swim in the 200 breaststroke was awesome. She wasn’t intimidated at all and it was great to see her do so well,” said Fleck.

Other second-place finishers for Ohio State were Cheverton in the 500 freestyle (4:54.57), sophomore Jill Lockhart in the 200 backstroke (2:05.07) and Brix in the 200 butterfly (2:06.87).

“I am very glad we came out here. I hate to lose but there were so many bright spots tonight that it made me feel really good. Everybody shined and swam really well,” said Fleck.

The Buckeyes host the third annual Ohio State Invitational, Nov. 30-Dec. 2, at the McCorkle Aquatics Pavilion.
