Ohio State Wins TTUN Series, Secures Longest Win Streak Since ’09

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State baseball team (30-25, 8-15 Big Ten) defeated Michigan (26-25, 13-10 Big Ten), 9-5, on Saturday night to win its series against the Wolverines for the first time since 2019. Ohio State has won eight straight games, which is its longest win streak since 2009.

Game Recap

  • With one out on the board bottom of the first, Matthew Graveline tripled to center field for the Buckeyes first hit of the game. Marcus Ernst stepped up to the plate next and he blasted a two-run homerun out of the park to give the Buckeyes an early 2-0 lead over the Wolverines.

  • In the bottom of the second, Caden Kaiser was walked. Designated hitter Tyler Pettorini extend the Ohio State lead to 4-0 after he went yard, sending one over the right field fence.

  • Michigan cut the Buckeye lead in half in the top of the third, 4-2, after a two-run homerun.
  • The Buckeyes answered in the bottom of the fifth. Trey Lipsey led off with a homerun to right center, giving Ohio State a 5-2 advantage over the Wolverines.

  • Another homerun from the Buckeyes, this time off the bat of Mitchell Okuley, in the bottom of the sixth frame put OSU back ahead by four runs, 6-2. Lipsey came up big again, tripling to left center with two runners on to plate two more for the Buckeyes and give them their biggest lead of the game, 8-2.

  • The Wolverines scored once in the top of the seventh, but the Buckeyes maintained the lead, 8-3.
  • Cole Andrews scored the final run of the game for the Buckeyes in the bottom of the seventh inning to put them back ahead by six, 9-3.
  • Back-to-back homeruns from Michigan to lead off the ninth put the Wolverines within four runs of Ohio State, 9-5, but the Buckeyes held strong to earn the win.

Buckeyes by the Numbers

  • Lipsey led the Buckeyes in hits with three. He was just a double short of hitting for the cycle.

  • Lipsey also led the team in RBIs with three, while Ernst and Pettorini each batted in two runs.
  • Isaiah Coupet (4-3) earned the win. He fanned seven and allowed just two runs on four hits in 5.0 innings pitched. He did not issue any walks.

  • Justin Eckhardt struck out four in 2.2 innings of relief. He gave up one run on four hits.
  • Logan Jones earned his first career save after tossing the final inning for the Buckeyes.

  • The Buckeyes and Wolverines play the final game of their three-game series on Saturday, May 20 at 2:00 p.m. Ohio State will honor the class of 2023 prior to the start of Sunday’s game.
