DULUTH, Minn. – Junior captain Meaghan Mulvaney led the Ohio State women’s ice hockey team to a 4-3 upset over No. 5 Minnesota-Duluth Friday night marking the Buckeyes’ first victory in Duluth, Minn. OSU improves its record to 13-8-2 overall and 9-7-1 in the WCHA, while UMD falls to 12-9-2 overall and 8-6-1 in WCHA action.
The Buckeyes and Bulldogs face off at 7:05 p.m. Saturday for the second game of the series in Duluth, Minn.
Minnesota-Duluth got on the scoreboard first, as Jenny Potter shot the puck OSU’s goalie Melissa Glaser (Jr., Rockford, Ill.) at 7:21. Ohio State had several attempts including a power-play opportunity, but could not get the puck past UMD’s goalie. At the end of the first period, the Bulldogs led 7-4 in shots.
The Bulldogs went up 2-0 as Potter scored her second goal 29 seconds into the second period. Ohio State senior Heather Farrell (Sr., Perth, Ontario) scored the Buckeyes’ first goal of the game, assisted by Amber Bowman (Fr., Innisfil, Ontario) at 9:40. OSU tied the game at 2-all at 12:56 in the second stanza. Junior captain Meaghan Mulvaney (Jr., Sylvania, Ohio) turned the puck over near center ice for a breakaway goal and her seventh goal of the season. UMD tallied 11 shots to OSU’s eight in the period.
UMD came out strong in the third period, as Bulldog Jessica Koizumi scored a goal at 4:18. Ohio State soon followed with a goal of its own, as Bowman scored a goal of her own at 5:46. The Buckeyes took a 4-3 the lead as Mulvaney recorded her second breakaway goal on a Buckeye penalty-kill at 10:14.
OSU goaltender Glaser ecorded 33 saves and allowed three goals. UMD goalie Riitta Schaublin stopped 12-of-16 Buckeye chances.
Ohio State’s fifth-ranked nationally penalty-killing unit held UMD to just one goal on five power-play chances. OSU was scoreless on all five power plays. Minnesota-Duluth outshot Ohio State 36-16 in the game.
