COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State men’s hockey nonconference schedule for 2016-17 includes 16 games, with seven of the matchups at home in Value City Arena. The slate includes at least one game vs. a team in each of the other five conferences.
The regular season opens at the Ice Breaker Tournament in Denver Oct. 7-8, where the Buckeyes will be joined by the host Pioneers of the NCHC, Hockey East member Boston College and Air Force, which competes in Atlantic Hockey. Both Denver and the BC Eagles advanced to the NCAA Frozen Four in 2016. This year marks the 20th edition of the Ice Breaker; Ohio State played in the 1998 tournament in Mariucci Arena in Minneapolis and in the 20014 tourney in Durham, N.H.
Ohio State and Denver have met 10 times, with the most recent matchup a two-game series in Columbus Oct. 15-16, 2009. The Buckeyes and Eagles have met six times, with the last matchup a 3-2 Buckeye victory in the Florida College Classic Dec. 28, 2015. Air Force and Ohio State have met on the ice 20 times, but have not faced off since a 7-4 Ohio State win in the Denver Cup Dec. 29, 1995.
After the Icebreaker, the Buckeyes return to Ohio for three consecutive games vs. instate foes. The Buckeyes travel to Oxford for a game vs. Miami of the NCHC Oct. 15 before a home-and-home series with WCHA member Bowling Green Oct. 21-22. The opening game of the series with the Falcons will be on the road in Bowling Green, with game two in Value City Arena to open the home slate.
Oct. 28-29, the Buckeyes travel for two games at Niagara, a member of Atlantic Hockey, in New York. A home-and-home series with Atlantic Hockey school Robert Morris follows. The Buckeyes will host the Colonials Nov. 4 before the series shifts to Moon Township, Pa., Nov. 5.
The next week, the Buckeyes welcome Connecticut to Columbus Nov. 11-12. The series marks the first games between Ohio State and the Huskies, who skate in Hockey East.
The final nonconference series for the first half of the season is Nov. 18-19, when the Buckeyes head to Troy, N.Y., for two games against Rensselaer, a member of the ECAC.
New Year’s Eve features the Buckeyes hosting instate foe Miami to close the season series between the teams. The game, the first Dec. 31 contest in program history, kicks off the second half of the Buckeyes’ season.
Arizona State visits Columbus Jan. 13-14 to close the Buckeyes’ regular season nonconference schedule. The series will be the first between the teams, as the Sun Devils moved to Division I last season. Arizona State is currently skating as an independent.
In a previously announced matchup, Ohio State will face Wisconsin in a Big Ten Conference game at Madison Square Garden in New York City Jan. 28 as part of the conference’s “Super Saturday – College Hoops & Hockey” doubleheader.
The remaining Big Ten Conference schedule will be released at a later date.
