COLUMBUS, Ohio A nine-game home regular season schedule and the return of the Big Ten Tournament to Buckeye Varsity Field highlights the 2022 Ohio State field hockey schedule, which was released today.

In all, the Buckeyes play 18 regular season games, beginning the weekend of Aug. 26-28 with games in Albany, N.Y. vs. Northeastern and Albany. Most notably, Ohio State hosts the 2022 Big Ten Field Hockey Tournament, which will take place Nov. 3-6. It will be the first time since 2013 that the Buckeyes have hosted the conference’s postseason tournament.

“This 2022 fall season is going to be exciting in a lot of ways,” said head coach Jarred Martin, who enters his sixth season with the Buckeyes. “First, I am excited for the team and what we are capable of this season. The team had a great spring and I know they want to continue to grow in the Big Ten and the NCAA with our successes.

“We have another year where we have some great non-conference opponents that will challenge our game with different styles and tactics to help us prepare for Big Ten and post-season play.”

The 2022 home schedule begins on Sunday, Sept. 4 when Patriot League foe Lehigh comes to Columbus. Two weeks later, on Sept. 16, the Buckeyes play their Big Ten opener at home against Maryland.

Another highlight of the 2022 home schedule includes the weekend of Oct. 14-16 when Ohio State hosts 2021 Big Ten regular season champion Iowa (Oct. 14) and 2021 NCAA champion Northwestern (Oct. 16). In all, the Buckeyes will face seven teams that were in the NCAA Tournament last fall.

The first home date of the season – Sept. 4 – will be part of the team’s annual Alumnae Weekend. Other 2022 theme games include Sept. 16 vs. Maryland (Military Appreciation), Sept. 18 vs. Wake Forest (Youth Clinic), Oct. 2 vs. Kent State (Pink Game for breast cancer awareness), Oct. 14 vs. Iowa (MVP Day), Oct. 16 vs. Northwestern (Pride Game) and Oct. 30 vs. Ball State (Senior Day).

The Big Ten Tournament will begin on Thursday, Nov. 3 with four quarterfinal games and continue the next day, Friday, Nov. 4, with a pair of semifinals. The championship game is slated for Sunday, Nov. 6. The last time Ohio State hosted the event, it upset second-seeded Northwestern in the quarterfinals.

“The Big Ten has been the premier conference and this year will be no different,” said Martin. “We have some of the top teams and players in the country. I am looking forward to conference tournament here on our home field where the local field hockey community will be able to watch some top level play.”

Fans who come to Buckeye Varsity Field in 2022 with notice several significant changes. The first is a new astroturf playing surface, in addition to a new press box and videoboard. Work on those projects is ongoing this summer and will be completed by August.

“This season will also mark the opening of our new look to Buckeye Varsity Field,” said Martin. “The new astroturf looks fantastic and the other upgrades around the stadium will make it one of the top field hockey venues in the country.”

The 2022 Buckeyes return 16 letterwinners from last year’s team and welcome in a large class of newcomers that includes 10 freshmen and four transfers.

“August will be here before we know it and I can’t wait to see the OSU field hockey and family back together in Columbus at Buckeye Varsity Field,” said Martin. “Great venue, great competition, and a Big Ten tournament all on the horizon.”
