COLUMBUS, Ohio – It’s the series that will determine the Buckeyes’ Big Ten Tournament appearance. The Ohio State baseball team travels to West Lafayette, Ind., for a three-game set at Purdue Thursday-Saturday at Alexander Field to conclude the 2019 regular season. The Buckeyes (28-24, 9-12 B1G) currently stand in ninth place in the Big Ten standings, a half game back from eighth-place Rutgers (20-28, 9-11 B1G). The Boilermakers (20-31, 7-13 B1G) are tied for 11th. The Top 8 teams advance to the Big Ten Tournament next week at TD Ameritrade Park in Omaha, Neb. All three games will be streamed on BTN Plus and can be heard on AM 1460 ESPN. Matt Andrews and Bob Spears will have the call.

Thursday: RHP Garrett Burhenn (5-3, 3.89 ERA) vs. RHP Trent Johnson (3-2, 2.38 ERA)

Six Big Ten teams will battle this weekend for the final two spots to qualify for the Big Ten Tournament. Northwestern is seventh (10-11) followed by Rutgers (9-11), Ohio State (9-12), Maryland (9-12), Purdue (7-13) and Michigan State (7-13). Michigan (15-5) is at the top of the standings in front of Indiana (14-7), Illinois (13-8), Nebraska (13-8), Minnesota (13-8) and Iowa (12-9).   • Ohio State is 28-24 overall and 9-12 in Big Ten play. The Buckeyes are 5-5 in their last 10 games.
  • Ohio State is led by ninth-year head coach Greg Beals. He is 289-227-1 overall at Ohio State and holds a 532-429-1 career coaching record. Beals has guided the team to NCAA Regional appearances in two of the last three years.
  • Ohio State is hitting .268 as a team with 86 doubles, 13 triples and 52 homers.
  • The OSU pitching staff has combined for a 4.79 ERA with 476 strikeouts in 475.1 innings of work. The pitching staff is 19 strikeouts away from tying the program-record for strikeouts in a season set in 2016 (495).
  • Dominic Canzone leads the team with a .355 average, 52 runs scored, 15 homers, 39 RBI, .649 slugging, .446 on-base percentage and eight stolen bases. He is first in the Big Ten in hits, homers and total bases (137).

  • Seth Lonsway is the reigning Big Ten Pitcher of the Week. He leads the team with six wins this season. He is second in the Big Ten with 96 strikeouts. Lonsway needs four strikeouts to become the first Buckeye pitcher to fan 100 hitters in a single season since Alex Wimmers (2009).
  • Andrew Magno is 3-3 with a 2.34 ERA in 25 appearances out of the bullpen. He has fanned 51 in 42.1 innings.
  • The game Thursday will be the 215th meeting between Ohio State and Purdue. The Buckeyes lead the all-time series 148-65-1. The Scarlet and Gray swept the Boilermakers in the last series at Alexander Field in 2016. Ohio State is 6-4 in the last 10 meetings vs. Purdue.

The Boilermakers are hitting .242 as a team with 58 doubles, 16 triples and 11 homers. Cole McKenzie leads the bats with a .309 average and nine stolen bases. Skyler Hunter is batting .308 with a team-high 35 runs scored, nine doubles and six triples. The Purdue pitching staff has combined for a 4.17 ERA with 450 strikeouts in 444.2 innings of work. Trent Johnson is 3-2 with a 2.38 ERA with 66 strikeouts in 53.0 innings pitched. Bo Hofstra leads the squad with a 1.49 ERA and seven saves in 2019.

Ohio State finished its non-conference schedule with a 7-4 win at Youngstown State Tuesday night at Eastwood Field. Conner Pohl knocked his first career grand slam to tie the game in the fifth. He finished the game with a three-hit day. Dominic Canzone hit his second game-winning homer in a week when he blasted a two-run shot in the top of the eighth. Nick Erwin also had three hits in the road win. Left-handed reliever Mitch Milheim recorded his first collegiate win with 2.2 scoreless innings and three strikeouts.
