Ohio State Travels to Face No. 19 Wisconsin, Minnesota this Weekend

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State women’s soccer team hits the road to square off with No. 19 Wisconsin and Minnesota this weekend. The Buckeyes take on the Badgers at 6 p.m. ET Friday before a 2 p.m. ET Sunday contest against the Golden Gophers.

Ohio State split the opening weekend of conference play, earning a 1-0 win over Michigan State Thursday night before a 2-1 defeat to Michigan Sunday afternoon. Kayla Fischer scored the game-winner in the 77th minute against the Spartans while Marissa Birzon opened the scoring in the 24th minute against the Wolverines.

– Ohio State ranks third in the Big Ten with 16.67 shots per game.
– Kayla Fischer and Marissa Birzon are tied for seventh in the Big Ten with four goals.
– Fischer’s two game-winners are tied for sixth in the conference.
– Ohio State allowed just one shot on frame against the Spartans last Thursday, tying a season low set against Miami (Ohio) Sept. 13.

Senior Marike Mousset and junior Izzy Rodriguez have been named captains of the 2019 Ohio State women’s soccer team, head coach Lori Walker-Hock announced Aug. 27.

Mousset, now in her second season as a captain of the Buckeyes, and Rodriguez both are in their third season serving in a starting role for Ohio State.

Junior Izzy Rodriguez was named to the 2019 MAC Hermann Trophy watch list, United Soccer Coaches announced Aug. 1. Rodriguez becomes the fourth Buckeye, and the first since Paige Maxwell in 2011, to be named to the watch list for the award given to the Division I collegiate player of the year.

Over her first two seasons, Rodriguez played in 40 matches, including 39 starts, picking up first team All-Big Ten honors as a sophomore and third team All-Big Ten and Big Ten All-Freshman team laurels in her opening season. Rodriguez was a 2018 United Soccer Coaches first team All-North Region selection and 2017 second team Freshman All-American.

No. 19 Wisconsin is 6-2-1 on the year and 2-0-0 in Big Ten play after road wins at Maryland and Rutgers last weekend. The Badgers’ two losses on the year were 1-0 defeats at No. 1 Florida State and at No. 5 UCLA. Dani Rhodes paces Wisconsin with four goals while Jordyn Bloomer has posted a 0.53 goals-against average with four clean sheets in goal.

The Buckeyes hold an 11-10-7 lead in the all-time series with the Badgers after a 2-1 win last year in Columbus.

Minnesota is 1-7-2 on the year and 0-2-0 in conference play after a pair of 2-0 defeats at Rutgers and Maryland last weekend. Makenzie Langdok leads the Golden Gophers with two goals on the year.

Ohio State leads the all-time series with the Gophers, 12-11-4, after a 2-1 road win in 2017.

Ohio State is under the direction of 23rd-year head coach Lori Walker-Hock. The three-time Big Ten Coach of the Year has guided the team to 13 NCAA Tournament berths (2002-03-04-07-09-10-11-12-13-15-16-178), two Big Ten regular season championship (2010, 2017) and three Big Ten Tournament championships (2002, 2004, 2012). Her record at Ohio State is 253-171-46 and her career record, including two seasons at Kansas, is 266-194-47.

Assistant coaches Brian Jankowski and Michael Needham are each in their third season on Walker-Hock’s staff.

Ohio State returns home to square off with Maryland at 7 p.m. Oct. 3 and Penn State at 2 p.m. Oct. 6.
