COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State men’s basketball team locked down Samford in the second half on its way to a 68-50 win Tuesday night at Value City Arena. The Buckeyes improve to 5-0 on the year while handing the Bulldogs (4-1) their first loss.
Kaleb Wesson tied his career high with 19 points to go along with seven rebounds while Keyshawn Woods added 14 points, four boards and four assists. Myron Gordon led Samford with 18 points, with only two coming after the half, while Josh Sharkey and Brandon Austin each scored 11.
The first half was tight throughout after the Bulldogs took an 11-4 lead on a Gordon 3-pointer with 16:55 to play. Ohio State answered back with a 7-0 run over the next 3:27 to make it an 11-11 contest on a Wesson layup with 13:28 to play and neither side would have a lead of more than four the rest of half as Samford took a 32-29 lead to the half.
Wesson led Ohio State with nine points in the first 20 minutes while Luther Muhammad and Woods each added four. Gordon paced Samford with 16 at the break and Sharkey chipped in four six points and three assists.
Austin came out of the break with a 3-pointer for the Bulldogs but Ohio State answered with a 21-3 run, capped by a pair of Kyle Young buckets, over the next 10:22 to put the Buckeyes in control at 50-38. The Bulldogs cut the lead to eight on two occasions down the stretch but Ohio State closed the contest on a 12-2 spurt to improve to 5-0 on the year.
Ohio State limited Samford to 36.8 percent shooting, the fourth time in five games to start the season the Buckeyes have held their opponents under 40 percent from the field.
The Buckeyes continue their homestand when they host Cleveland State at 8 p.m. Friday at St. John Arena.
