COLUMBUS, Ohio – Buckeye senior Jeni Creary recorded her first hat trick of the season to lead the Ohio State women’s ice hockey team to a 5-3 victory over Minnesota State Friday night at the OSU Ice Rink in Columbus, Ohio. With the win, the Buckeyes improve to 16-14-3 overall and 12-14-1 in the WCHA, while the Mavericks fall to 8-18-6 overall and 7-16-3 in the WCHA.

Ohio State takes on Minnesota State at 4 p.m. Saturday in the Buckeyes’ final regular-season game in the OSU Ice Rink. Prior to the game all five Ohio State seniors will be recognized for their accomplishments over the past four years.

“We had very good team effort tonight and as the game progressed we got stronger and stronger as a team,” Jackie Barto, Ohio State head coach, said. “We are looking forward to the game tomorrow night and honoring the seniors for the past four years.”

In the first period four goals were scored in under four minutes between both teams. The first goal came at 4:52 by Minnesota State’s Amanda Stohr. Ohio State followed 40 seconds later as OSU’s leading goal scorer Jeni Creary (Shell Lake, Saskatchewan) scored her 24th goal of the season on a pass from junior Jana Harrigan (Burlington, Ontario). The Mavericks posted their second goal of the game from Melanie Salatino at 8:05. The Buckeyes stepped it up when Harrigan tied the game at 2-all at 8:45. Leading rookie Mallory Peckels (Minocqua, Wis.) assisted on the goal. MSU posted nine shots to OSU’s seven in the stanza.

Ohio State came out strong taking a 4-3 lead in the second period. Two minutes into the stanza, Ohio State was awarded a penalty shot following MSU’s Kristina Bunker penalty for covering the puck in the crease at 2:27. OSU’s Creary attempted the shot for Buckeyes but could not get the puck past MSU’s goalie. OSU’s Creary tipped in a power-play goal from the slot on a shot from Amber Bowman (Innisfil, Ontario) at 14:14. Harrigan also assisted on the goal. MSU tied the game on a goal from Noelle Needham at 16:02. Senior Buckeye Creary recorded her first hat trick of the season on a breakaway at 19:00. Harrigan and Peckels assisted on the goal. Ohio State outshot MSU 20 to three in the second stanza.

The Buckeyes secured their victory as they added one goal while holding the Mavericks to just three shots on goal in the final 20 minutes of action. Ohio State went up 5-3 when freshman Erin Keys (St. Paul, Minn.) scored her third goal of the season at 3:06. OSU outshot MSU nine to three in the third stanza.

Ohio State sophomore goalie Erika Vanderveer (Bradford, Ontario) recorded 12 saves the full 60 minutes of action. Minnesota State’s Laura Brennan 31 saves in 59:55 minutes.

Ohio State tallied 36 shots and held Minnesota State to 15 shots. OSU held MSU scoreless on 3-of-4 power-play chances. The Buckeyes converted on 1-of-6 power-play opportunities.
