Ohio State Tops Michigan State, 1-0, on Birzon’s Game-Winner

EAST LANSING, Mich. – The Ohio State women’s soccer team shut out Michigan State, 1-0, Sunday afternoon at DeMartin Stadium. With the victory, the Buckeyes improve to 7-5-1 on the year, 4-2-1 in the Big Ten, while the Spartans drop to 5-6-3 overall, 0-5-2 in conference play.

“Our midfield was super effective today linking passes and unlocking the game for us,” Lori Walker-Hock, Ohio State head coach, said. “We had poise, energy and commitment to move off the ball for 90 minutes.”

– The best opportunity of the first half came less than three minutes in when Ohio State’s Kayla Fischer hit a left-footed shot from the top of the box toward the right post but Michigan State goalkeeper Reilley Ott ranged to her left to make the diving stop.
– Ohio State then took the lead shortly after the half in the 51st minute. Kayla Fischer found Marissa Birzon at the top of the box and the sophomore was able to dribble past a Michigan State defender and lace a left-footed shot inside the right post from 10 yards for her second goal of the season.

– The Buckeyes continued to put the pressure on as the contest went on. In the 68th minute, Alyssa Baumbick ripped a shot from 20 yards that narrowly missed wide right. Then in the 79th minute, Sarah Roberts curled a left-footed shot from the top of the box toward the right post but Ott again made the diving stop.

– Ohio State improved to 7-0-0 on the year when scoring first. The Buckeyes are 32-1-1 when scoring first since the start of the 2016.
– Ohio State goalkeeper Devon Kerr made a pair of saves to record her sixth shutout of the year and 17th of her career.
