Ohio State to Meet Creighton in 2018 Gavitt Games

COLUMBUS, Ohio–The Big Ten and BIG EAST Conferences announced the matchups for the fourth-annual Gavitt Tipoff Games, with eight men’s basketball contests set for Nov. 13-16, 2018. Game times and television assignments will be announced at a later date.

Ohio State will travel to Creighton Nov. 15. This will be the Buckeyes’ second appearance in the event. Providence College traveled to Ohio State Nov. 17, 2016, for a matchup the Buckeyes won 72-67.

C.J. Jackson and Micah Potter are the only Buckeyes on the 2018-19 roster who played in the game vs. the Friars. Potter, who just completed his sophomore season in Columbus, played just four minutes while Jackson, who will be a senior next year, played five. Neither scored in the game.

Chris Holtmann, now in his second season with the Buckeyes, coached in the BIG EAST at Butler prior to taking over the Ohio State program as its head coach last June.

In six meetings with Creighton, Holtmann is 3-3 vs. the Bluejays. Ohio State is 5-3 in the all-time series against Creighton. The teams last faced one another Nov. 24, 2004, in the Guardians Classic in Kansas City, Missouri. The Bluejays outlasted the Buckeyes 65-63 in overtime.

Ohio State is 34-16 all-time vs. current members of the BIG EAST Conference.

In Holtmann’s first season at Ohio State, the Buckeyes finished 25-9 overall with a 15-3 record in Big Ten Conference regular-season play. Ohio State finished second in the conference standings, earning a No. 2 seed in the 2018 Big Ten Tournament.

The Buckeyes traveled to Boise, Idaho, as the No. 5 seed in the West Regional of the 2018 NCAA Tournament.

Creighton ended the 2017-18 season 21-12 with a 10-8 record in the Big East.

The Gavitt Tipoff Games is a unique early-season series played between the two conferences and named in honor of Dave Gavitt, founder of the BIG EAST and basketball visionary.
