COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State played a solid 36-holes to open the Crooked Stick Invitational, holding down a share of fourth place at 10-over par after rounds of 287 (-1) and 299 (+11). The morning round provided great weather conditions for scoring but as the day progressed, the wind kicked up and made the 7,516-yard Crooked Stick course that much more difficult for the players.

Felix Kvarnstrom opened the tournament with two strong rounds, posting 71-73 to place eighth at even par. The Swede played his first eight holes of the day at two-over before collecting three birdies on the latter half of the back nine to coast to a one-under 71. In his second round, the wind bared its teeth but Kvarnstrom battled through the adversity to post a second good score. He mixed in four birdies and an eagle among eight pars to card a one-over 73 and lead the Buckeyes.

Freshman Patrick Schmucking also played well at Crooked Stick, just one behind Kvarnstrom through 36 holes at one-over par and tied for 15th. Schmucking started his day off well, getting as low as three-under par at one point before the links fought back, ending the first 18 even par with four birdies. The freshman opened his second round with a double bogey but turned it around quickly, carding four birdies in his round to shoot 73.

Junior Kevin Stone carded rounds of 70 and 76 to come in at two-over par, good enough for a spot in the top-15. Stone made one bogey on his second hole then ran through the rest of the course, sinking three birdies in a row and finishing with 11 consecutive pars, to turn in a two-under 70. The Carmel, Indiana native, like the rest of the field, was affected by the weather but made good shots down the stretch to close out day one with a four-over 76.

Sophomore Grant Engle shot 74-78 to place 48th and redshirt sophomore JonErik Alford shot 78-77 to place 62nd.
