Ohio State Sweeps Titles at Evansville Opener

COLUMBUS, Ohio –The Ohio State men’s and women’s cross country programs had a successful start to the 2021 season Friday at the Evansville Opener at Angel Mounds State Historic Site in Evansville, Ind. Both programs won the team title and had the Top 4 finishers.

The men’s team totaled 15 points and they took the Top 9 places in their 8,000m race, led by freshman Kevin Agnew won placed first in his Ohio State debut. The women, in a 5,000m race, had 16 team points, with sophomore Addie Engel finishing first.

Filling the Buckeyes’ Top 5 spots for the men along with Agnew in first place were Mikey Zedan, Nick Regas, Zubin Jha and Zach Shultz.

The No. 28-ranked Buckeyes took the Top 4 spots and seven of the Top 10 for the women. The Top 5 scorers were race winner Engel, Daniella Santos, Hannah Moulton, Andrea Kuhn (in first through fourth place) and Akemi Von Scherr in sixth.

Joining the Buckeyes in the men’s race were Indiana State, Marquette, Vincennes, Evansville and Oakland City. The same teams were in the women’s race, along with Kentucky Wesleyan.

“The men and women both had great races. True freshman Kevin Agnew got his first collegiate win and Big Ten scorer Addie Engel got her first collegiate win. She looked amazing and has picked up right where she left off last season.

“Both teams ran together as a group and executed the game plan. We look forward to continuing to run as a pack and as a complete team next week.”

Noting the Buckeyes

  • Making their Buckeye cross country debut for the men were Kevin Agnew, Sean Carney and Zach Plotkin.
  • Four Buckeye men ran their personal best in an 8K – John Cuozzo, Zubin Jha, Nick Regas and Mikey Zedan.
  • For the women, Emma Bucher, Juliana Metz, Mia Mlynek and Sophia Spencer made their Ohio State cross country debuts.
  • Alexa Jankowsky and Hannah Moulton notched their personal bests for a 5k in the Scarlet and Gray.
  • Evansville will also be the site of the NCAA Great Lakes Regional Championships Nov. 12, with the meet Friday allowing the Buckeyes an early season look at the course.

Up Next

  • The Buckeyes will travel to University Park, Pa., for the Harry Groves Spiked Shoe Invitational Sept. 10. Penn State is also the host site for the 2021 Big Ten Championships, slated for Oct. 29.
