COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State women’s hockey team broke a scoreless tie halfway through the third to take a 1-0 victory over Minnesota State Saturday at the All Seasons Arena in Mankato, Minn. The win gave the Buckeyes their second conference series sweep of the season and the shutout was the first of goalie Lisa Steffes’ career.
Steffes tallied 23 saves in the win and improved to 4-1-0 on the season. Minnesota State’s Danielle Butters had a game-high 31 saves and fell to 1-2-0.
After scoreless first and second periods, the Buckeyes scored the lone goal of the game at 10:04 in the third. A Maverick hooking penalty at 9:10 gave Ohio State its third power play opportunity of the game and the team capitalized when junior Hokey Langan found the back of the net for her second goal of the season. Assists went to seniors Kelly Wild and Laura McIntosh. The assist was the sixth of the season for McIntosh and is a team high.
The Buckeyes improved to 5-2-1 overall and 5-2-1-1 in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association. The loss dropped the Mavericks to 4-6-0 overall and 0-4-0 in conference play.
Ohio State led in shots, 32-23, and was 1-of-3 in power play opportunities.
The Buckeyes return to the OSU Ice Rink for a WCHA series against the top-ranked Wisconsin Badgers, Nov. 4-5. Both games are set for 7:07 p.m. ET starts.
