COLUMBUS, Ohio –   The Ohio State softball team wrapped up its fall season last weekend, sweeping Kent State in a doubleheader exhibition Sunday at Buckeye Field. The Buckeyes won the first exhibition, 2-0, before claiming an 8-6 victory in the second exhibition vs. the Golden Flashes. Ohio State concludes the fall season with a 6-2 record.

Game One: Kent State 0, Ohio State 2
Sophomore pitcher Olivia O’Reilly highlighted the first exhibition vs. Kent State, throwing a complete-game four-hit shutout, while striking out nine KSU batters en route to the victory. O’Reilly, a native of Sylvania, Ohio, limited the Golden Flashes to six baserunners, sending down Kent State in order in the first, third and fourth innings, respectively. Kent State had just two runners reach second base during the exhibition, while O’Reilly left both runners on after a fly out and strikeout in the second and fifth innings, respectively.

Offensively, Ohio State just needed one solid swing of the bat to be the difference in the contest. In the bottom of the first with one down, junior Evelyn Carrillo blasted a home run after sophomore Shelby Pickett walked to begin the frame to make the score 2-0 – the eventual final. Carrillo, a native of Corona, Calif., has collected 81 RBI through her first two campaigns as a Buckeye.

Game Two: Kent State 6, Ohio State 8
In the second exhibition, the Buckeyes claimed an 8-6 victory against Kent State after posting a five-run first inning and adding two runs in the second and one final run in the third, while shutting down the KSU bats in the final three innings.

Offensively, Ohio State was led by sophomore Maddy McIntyre, who went 2-for-3 with a double, RBI and run scored, while freshman Cammi Prantl posted a solo home run and sophomores Shelby Pickett and Taylor Watkins had one-run, two-run doubles, respectively.

In the opening inning, the Buckeyes batted around against the Kent State pitching staff. After Pickett lead off the inning with a walk, Carrillo sent a single up the middle to make it 1-0. The Buckeyes then had runners on second and third after a single by McIntyre and a fielding error on the play.

Watkins then extended the score to 3-0 when she sent a double over the center fielder’s head to score both Carrillo and McIntyre. After back-to-back walks, Watkins plated the team’s fourth run when she touhed home plate following a wild pitch. Senior Brittany Mills claimed the team’s fifth run of the inning on a sacrifice fly to center field, scoring junior Melissa Rennie.

After Kent State managed to cut its deficit to 5-3 in the top half of the second, Ohio State came right back with two runs in the bottom half. Prantl lead off the offensive rally with a solo home run to center field, while McIntyre doubled to score pinch runner Alyson Mott to make it 7-3.

The Golden Flashes one again cut their deficit to two runs in the top of the third on a sacrifice fly and RBI single. However, Ohio State pushed its lead to three runs, 8-5, in the bottom half with its final run of the contest on a RBI double by Pickett, scoring freshman Jesse Machovina, who singled to begin the OSU at-bat.

Kent State made it 8-6 in the fourth, but was shut down by sophomore pitcher Alex DiDomenico in the final three innings. In 4.1 innings of relief work, DiDomenico allowed just one run on four hits with two walks and four strikeouts. Redshirt junior Melanie Nichols started for the Buckeyes and threw 2.2 innings, allowing four earned runs on five hits with three walks and three strikeouts.

Defensively, Prantl showed off her arm in the top of the third when she claimed an assist from left field. On a hard single to left and no outs, Prantl fired the ball to home plate and threw out a KSU runner for the first out of the inning.
