COLUMBUS, Ohio – Aaron Gretz, Brad Goldberg and Troy Kuhn, members of the Ohio State baseball team, combined to take all three Big Ten weekly awards, the conference office announced Monday. Gretz earned Big Ten Player of the Week laurels while Goldberg was named Pitcher of the Week for the second-consecutive week and Kuhn garnered Freshman of the Week honors.
Gretz, a sophomore from Apple Valley, Minn., made three starts on the weekend, going 5-for-10 with three doubles, six runs scored and three RBI as the Buckeyes went 4-0 in games against South Dakota State and Mount St. Mary’s. He reached base nine times in 14 plate appearances. Gretz is the first Ohio State Big Ten Player of the Week since Josh Dezse earned the honor Feb. 20 of last season.
Goldberg picked up the win after tossing 6.1 hitless innings and striking out a career-high 10 batters in a 13-2 win over Mount St. Mary’s Saturday night. The Buckeyes lost their combined no-hit bid with two outs in the ninth inning but the game was the first 10-strikeout game by a Buckeye since Alex Wimmers struck out 11 against Penn State in 2010. Goldberg has allowed two hits and struck out 17 over 13.1 scoreless frames this season.
In two games, Kuhn went 6-for-8 with a stolen base, four RBI and two runs scored. The infielder made his first two collegiate starts at third base against Mount St. Mary’s. The award is the first since Pat Porter was earned a Freshman of the Week honor April 9 of last season.
Ohio State takes on Connecticut, Stetson and Central Michigan this weekend in DeLand, Fla.
