COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State baseball team fell, 8-1, against Northern Kentucky Wednesday night at Nick Swisher Field at Bill Davis Stadium. With the loss, the Buckeyes fall to 15-22 overall, while the Norse improve to 13-22 in 2017.
THE NORSE STRIKE FIRST
Northern Kentucky pushed two runs home with two outs in the top of the first. A RBI double by NKU pitcher Trey Ganns scored the first run before RBI single by Dominic Mercurio to right field to make it 2-0.
OHIO STATE CUTS DEFICIT IN HALF
After a lead-off double by Dominic Canzone, a RBI ground out by Zach Ratcliff pushed the OSU freshman around. Jacob Barnwell moved him over with a sac bunt in the bottom of the second.
NKU EXTENDS LEAD
The Norse continued to make solid contact and plated three runs on four hits in the top of the third. Solo home runs by Ganns and Mercurio made it 4-1 before a RBI double down the left field line tallied the fifth run and ended Jake Vance’s night on the mound. In the top of the sixth, a RBI double off the wall in right by Brendon Alas gave the Norse a five-run lead. In the eighth, a two-run double by Ganns pushed it to 8-1.
ON THE MOUND
Ohio State starting pitcher Jake Vance allowed five runs on seven hits with two walks and two strikeouts in 2.2 innings of work to fall to 0-2 on the year. The OSU bullpen saw seven different arms on the mound tonight.. Right-handed reliever Curtiss Irving retired the final out of the third and threw 0.1 inning with one walk. Left-handed reliever Connor Curlis pitched a scoreless inning with one strikeout. Right-handed reliever Kyle Michalik threw one inning and gave up one unearned run on one hit. Left-handed reliever Joe Stoll and right-handed reliever Thomas Waning each tallied scoreless sixth and seventh innings. Waning fanned two hitters, while Stoll had one strikeout. Right-handed pitcher Ryan Feltner allowed two runs on two hits with two strikeouts in the eighth. Right-handed reliever Austin Woodby closed out the game with a scoreless ninth.
