OLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State women’s ice hockey team suffered a 3-2 loss to No. 3 Minnesota-Duluth Saturday night at the OSU Ice Rink in Columbus, Ohio. The UMD Bulldogs improve to 15-1-2 overall and 13-1-2 in the WCHA, while the Buckeyes fall to 10-9-1 and 9-9-0 in the WCHA.

Ohio State came out strong in the first period. The Buckeyes took control with an early goal by freshman Lisa Chesson. The Plainfield, Ill., native got the Buckeyes on the scoreboard as she scored an unassisted goal into the top corner of the net at 6:30. At the end of the first period, Minnesota-Duluth led seven to two in shots.

Minnesota-Duluth clinched the lead as the Bulldogs posted two power-play goals in the second period. UMD’s Caroline Ouellette capitalized on an extra-man advantage at 8:48. The Bulldogs’ second goal came during a 5-on-3 power-play opportunity at 15:02. UMD outshot OSU 22 to 14 in the second stanza.

The Buckeyes opened the third period with a goal to tie the game at two all. Junior Jana Harrigan (Jr., Burlington, Ontario) stole the puck at center ice to score her 10th goal of the season on a breakaway at 1:31. The game remained tied until the final 36 seconds when Minnesota Duluth’s Ouellette scored the game-winning goal on a pass from Jessica Koizumi and Noemie Marin. UMD outshot OSU nine to six in the final stanza.

Ohio State goalie Erika Vanderveer (So., Bradford, Ontario) posted 35 saves in 59:43 minutes. Minnesota-Duluth goalie Riitta Schaublin posted 20 saves in 59:43 minutes.

The Bulldogs outshot the Buckeyes 38-22. Ohio State held UMD scoreless on 7-of-9 power-play chances. The Buckeyes were unable to capitalize any of their seven power-play opportunities.

Ohio State continues its home stretch as the Buckeyes play host to non-conference opponent Yale at 7:05 p.m. Jan. 14 and 4:05 p.m. Jan. 15 in the OSU Ice Rink.
