Ohio State Starts Season with Dominating Performance at OSU Open

The Buckeyes finished strong in the first competition of the 2017 season. By the end of the day, five fencers took first place and 21 fencers finished top-10 in their weapon categories. Competition continues tomorrow with the OSU Duals which will be held in French Field House. First bouts will begin at 8 a.m.


Frederik Koch took the men’s sabre title after narrowly defeating Fares Arfa 15-14. Domenik Koch followed close behind tied for third. Andrew Herczak rounded out Ohio State’s sabre participation with a seventh place finish. Finishing first for the women’s sabre squad was sophomore Sarah Merza. Not far behind was Alexa Antipas and Aleksandra Kolmykova tied for third. Joanne Chen completed the women’s sabre squad performance finishing in seventh place.


The Buckeye’s took 6 of the top 10 foil performances, starting with a first place finish by Stas Sudilovsky. Julien Baneux followed in second place, suffering a 15-7 loss to Sudilovsky. William Gaziano and Justin Zhou made their Buckeye debuts finishing tied for third and fifth, respectively. Nicola Sirito and Leon Cao capped the men’s sabre squad’s performance with eighth and ninth place finishes.  The women’s foilists Alexa Laskaris and Gabriela Cecchini tying for third place. This was Cecchini’s first appearance for the Buckeyes.



Both the men and women dominated epee competition and finished almost identically. Marc-Antoine Blais Belanger and Emma von Dadelzen both took first place with teammates Oliver Shindler and Eva Petronchak taking second. On the men’s side, Jack Bradford and Matthew Comes tied for third place while Natalia Falkowski and Alexandria Aply took it for the women.  Lewis Weiss was edged out by Shindler 15-14 and went on to take fifth place. Gabrilla Leccese and John Culpepper wrapped up epee performances with sixth place finishes. This competition marked Bradford, Comes, and Petronchak’s first for the Buckeyes.



Following OSU Duals, Ohio State will continue regular season competition in Columbus with the Elite Invitational Duals on Nov. 4-5.
