COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State Buckeyes – 110 in all on the fall camp roster – took part in their first practice of the 2018 season Friday morning in helmets and shorts on the grass fields of the Woody Hayes Athletic Center. This was the first of 25 on-field practices before the start of the 129th season of Ohio State football, Sept. 1 against Oregon State in Ohio Stadium.
The roster includes 47 returning lettermen from the 2017 team that won the 36th Big Ten championship in school history and capped a 12-2 season with a 24-7 victory over No. 8 USC in the Goodyear Cotton Bowl.
The returning lettermen include 22 on defense, 21 on offense and all four specialist. Ohio State loses a total of 18 letterman from last season, six on offense and 12 on defense.
The team will practice Saturday and Sunday before a scheduled day off on Monday. Practice resumes on Tuesday, Aug. 7 and the team will migrate to its Coffey Road Fields for a series on practices starting Aug. 9. The first day in full pads is Aug. 8.
Fall Camp Schedule
Leading up to Sept. 1 and the game against Oregon State, the Buckeyes will practice at the Woody Hayes Athletic Center Aug. 3-4-5-7-8-20-21-22-23-24-25-27-28-29-30 and 31 (Best Friday) and at the Coffey Road Fields Aug. 9-10-11-13-14-15-16-17 and 18.
The 2018 Autumn Semester at Ohio State University begins on Tuesday, Aug. 21.
The first official rankings of the 2018 college football season have been released: the Amway Coaches Poll. Ohio State is ranked third in the poll behind Alabama and Clemson. The defending national champion Crimson Tide secured 61 of the 65 first-place votes with Clemson garnering three and Ohio State one.
Ohio State will play four of the top 16 teams in the preseason poll: No. 9 Penn State; No. 12 Michigan State; No. 14 Michigan and No. 16 TCU.
