PHOENIX, Ariz. – Ohio State split its opening day at the GCU Invite with a 4-0 loss to Weber State and 2-0 win over Lehigh Friday. The Buckeyes move to 14-7 on the season.
GAME 1: Weber State 4, Ohio State 0
Righty Skylar Hayward was tagged with the first loss of her career after 3.1 innings in the circle. She gave up three runs and four hits while striking out three. Lauren Rice saw three innings of action, allowing six hits and a run with one strikeout. Kat Duvall let in two hits in 0.2 innings of relief.
Both teams struggled to break through offensively until Weber State (6-14) went up 3-0 in the top of the fourth on a trio of RBI singles. Another RBI single in the seventh marked the final 4-0 tally.
The Buckeyes had a runner in scoring position in six of seven innings but was not able to make it count.
Lilli Piper was 2-for-3 at the plate with a double and stolen base. Kaitlyn Coffman, Meg Otte and Kallie Boren each had a hit.
Game 2: Ohio State 2, Lehigh 0
Kallie Boren put the Buckeyes ahead 1-0 in bottom of the first. Emily Clark singled through the right side before Boren roped a RBI double to the wall.
It was once again Clark and Boren in the sixth. Clark knocked a double to the wall to start the frame and Boren singled to left center to bring her in.
RHP Morgan Ray went the distance, giving up two hits and sitting down four Mountain Hawks.
Clark was 3-for-3 with two runs, extending her on-base streak to 21 games.
The Buckeyes are back at it Saturday against Lehigh at 10 a.m. MT/1 p.m. ET and Grand Canyon at 3 p.m. MT/6 p.m. ET.
