Box Score

BOCA RATON, Fla. – Host Florida Atlantic University scored seven runs in the third and fourth inning Friday, six of which were unearned, on its way to downing the Ohio State softball team, 11-3, at the FAU Doubletree Classic. After shutting out Rutgers 8-0 earlier Friday, the Buckeyes see their season record slip to 1-1 after the first day of the 2005 season.

Ohio State sophomore Christina Douglas (Mesa, Ariz./Dobson) drilled a two-RBI single up the middle to score sophomore Nycole Koyano (Walnut, Calif./Walnut) and senior Karisa Evans (Franklin, Ohio/Franklin), who had both walked. Evans singled in the first inning and walked again in the fifth.

FAU’s Jessica Braggins tripled with one out in the second inning, but Juarez worked out of the inning with a lineout and a strikeout. However, three Ohio State errors during the third and fourth inning led to six of FAU’s first seven runs being unearned. Danielle Arriaga hit a two run home run in the sixth inning for FAU, which added another three runs later in the frame to provide the game’s final runs.

Freshman Brittany Vanderink (Hiram, Ohio/Crestwood) tripled in the fifth inning, marking her second triple in her first two collegiate games. She scored one batter later when Koyano grounded out to short stop. Sophomore Jamee Juarez (La Puente, Calif./Wilson) went 2-for-3 at the plate for the Buckeyes.

Juarez pitched the first five and 1/3 innings, striking out four Owls and allowing just one earned run. Freshman Nicole Gragson (Long Beach, Calif./Wilson) and junior Andrea Tribuzi (Plano, Texas/Plano East) came on in relief for the Buckeyes, pitching the final 2/3 of the sixth inning.

The Owls have advanced to the NCAA tournament each of the last six years and improve to 3-11 in 2005.

Ohio State will face N.C. State at 11 a.m. and Pittsburgh at 1 p.m. Saturday as the FAU Doubletree Classic continues.
