COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State women’s ice hockey team (14-14-3; 11-14-1 WCHA) skated to a 2-2 tie in overtime against Niagara (11-13-3-; 2-5-1 CHA) Friday night in Dwyer Arena in Niagara Falls, N.Y.
Ohio State and Niagara return to action to complete the series at 7 p.m. Saturday in Dwyer Arena.
Both teams skated to a scoreless first period. The Buckeyes posted nine shots and had one power-play opportunity. Niagara recorded eight shots in the first stanza.
Ohio State recorded 17 shots and had three power-play chances including a 5-on-3 but the Buckeyes could not get the puck in net. OSU held Niagara to four shots in the period.
The Buckeyes scored the first goal of the game at 2:13 in the third period. OSU sophomore Katie Maroney (La Porte, Ind.) scored her fourth goal of the season on a shot from the point. Sophomore Tessa Bonhomme (Sudbury, Ontario) assisted on the goal. Niagara tied the game on a goal from Amy Jack at 5:42. Ohio State went up 2-1 on the scoreboard when senior Jeni Creary (Shell Lake, Saskathewan) scored her 22nd goal of the season, assisted by Mallory Peckels (Minocqua, Wis.,) at 10:55. Niagara’s Ashley Riggs tied the game at 2-all with a backdoor goal at 18:34. OSU tallied nine shots to NU’s 12.
In overtime, Ohio State had several scoring opportunities but the Buckeyes could not get the puck past Niagara’s goalie Allison Rutledge. OSU tallied three shots to NU’s one in overtime.
Ohio State sophomore goalie Erika Vanderveer (Bradford, Ontario) recorded 23 saves in the full 65 minutes of action. Niagara’s Allison Rutledge tallied 36 saves in 65 minutes. Ohio State outshot Niagara 38-25. The Buckeyes were unable to convert on any of their five power-play chances, while Niagara was 1-for-1 on the power play.
