CLEVELAND, Ohio – Ohio State remains in fifth place following day three of the NCAA Fencing Championships. The No. 8 women’s squad added 39 victories to the team’s overall score from yesterday. The Buckeyes now have a total of 108 points heading into the final rounds of the competition. The Buckeyes are 27 points shy of placing in the top three.
Sophomore Alexanne Verret, in her second appearance at the NCAA Championships, began the day on a high note. She defeated her first two opponents and went on to secure two more wins on the day.
The foil unit led the squad with 24 victories. Gabriela Cecchini went 11-4 overall with a +20 indicator. Cecchini is currently in sixth with three bouts separating her and the leader. Camilla Rivano walked away with 13 victories and a +25 indicator. Rivano had 62 winning touches against her opponents and will head into tomorrow’s competition sitting in third place.
Sarah Merza finished the first three rounds of the women’s competition in third place. Merza was triumphant in 11 of her 15 bouts with a +15 indicator. She heads into tomorrow’s competition a single victory behind first and second. This is Merza’s third time on NCAA strips.
Rounds 4-5 will begin at 9:00 a.m. tomorrow. The women will wrap up competition with semifinal and championship bouts starting at 1:00 p.m.
