Ohio State Signs Four to National Letters of Intent

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Four student-athletes have signed National Letters of Intent to be a part of the 2019 Ohio State softball program, head coach Kelly Kovach Schoenly announced today. Kaitlyn Coffman, Meg Otte, Ashley Prange and Jessica Ross are the newest additions to the OSU family.

Kaitlyn Coffman | UTL | Visalia, Calif. | Mt. Whitney High School

Garnered first team All-West Yosemite League honors twice…Received All-American recognition in 2016 and 2017… Two-time Most Valuable Player for her team…Chosen as a team captain and was the league MVP during her junior campaign… Recorded a .654 batting average, 24 RBI, 13 doubles, eight home runs and three triples as a junior…Also posted a 1.185 slugging percentage, .710 on-base percentage and .950 fielding percentage…Won the Division 3 Valley Championship as a member of the water polo team.

Coach Schoenly on Coffman: “Kaitlyn is an explosive player with top-notch softball IQ. She shows tremendous power at the plate and her versatility defensively will give us several options to get her in the lineup.”

Meg Otte | OF | East Sparta, Ohio | Sandy Valley High School

Three-time Inter-Valley Conference and Eastern District selection…Led Sandy Valley High School to three straight sectional championships…First team All-Ohio honoree and Inter-Valley Conference Player of the Year in 2017…Named Sandy Valley Defensive Player of the Year as a freshman and Stark County Player of the Year as a junior…Helped her team to a district championship and regional second-place finish in 2017…During her junior season, hit .531 with five home runs, 37 RBI, 50 runs scored, 18 extra-base hits and a slugging percentage of .918…Played club ball for the Lasers, who were the 16U ASA state co-champions in 2016. 

Coach Schoenly on Otte: “Meg is another standout player from the Laser organization to join the Buckeyes. She has shown consistency at the plate with her smooth and powerful swing. We can also look forward to her showcasing her arm strength in the outfield.”

Ashley Prange | SS | New Palestine, Ind. | New Palestine High School

NFCA and MaxPreps All-American…First team All-State honoree…NFCA Scholar Athlete…Ranked 59th on Flo Softball’s Hot 100 list for the Class of 2018…Set the Indiana state records for single-season home runs (21) and RBI (67)…Owns the New Palestine school record for career home runs (29)…2017 Hancock County Player of the Year…Led the Dragons to the 2017 state championship…Hit .552 with 21 home runs, 67 RBI, 59 runs scored, 14 doubles and a 1.141 slugging percentage as a junior…Played for club ball for the Bandits and helped them to the Triple Crown Nationals title…Hit the walk-off home run to win the PGF Nationals championship.

Coach Schoenly on Prange: “Ashley comes to us with multiple championships on her resume. She is a bonafide home run hitter and has proven to perform her best in the big moments. She brings a lot to the table by being a five-tool athlete combined with quality leadership skills.”

Jessica Ross | P | Woodland Hills, Calif. | Calabasas High School

Four-time first team All-Marmonte League selection…Chosen as the team captain each of the last two years…Four-year letterwinner…Ranked 34th on Flo Softball’s Hot 100 list for the Class of 2018…Has pitched 378 innings and recorded 509 strikeouts through three seasons…Spent two years with the Victory club team, which finished fourth at the 16U ASA Gold Nationals in 2015…Squad also placed second at the 2016 Junior Olympic Cup…Spent the last club season with Explosion, where she won 20 games and had 152 strikeouts in 171 innings of work as a junior.  

Coach Schoenly on Ross: “I expect Jessica to have a significant impact within our staff because she has been battle-tested through the highly competitive summer ball circuit in California. She has pinpoint accuracy and lively movement on her pitches.”
