Buckeyes will hold official welcoming ceremony for Sammy Hardy as a member of the softball family

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The No. 14/16 Ohio State softball team is just one week away from opening its 2010 campaign at the Marriott Houston Hobby Classic Feb. 12-14 in Houston, Texas. But before they head off on the road, the Buckeyes will shake off any preseason jitters Saturday by hosting a scrimmage, open to the public, at 1:30 p.m. in the Woody Hayes Athletic Center Indoor Field.

“Although it is tough to scrimmage against ourselves, this will give our hitters and pitchers one last time to face each other in a game-like situation before we open the early tournament portion of our season,” Linda Kalafatis, 14th-year Ohio State head coach, said.

All OSU softball fans are cordially invited to attend the scrimmage. Seating at the indoor field is limited so fans are encouraged to bring folding chairs.

Previous to the start of the scrimmage, the Buckeyes will officially introduce Sammy Hardy as a member the Ohio State softball family. The Scarlet and Gray have adopted Sammy through the Safe on the Sidelines program in connection with the Friends of Jaclyn Foundation. (For more information on the program Click Here)

In January, the Buckeyes met Sammy for the first time after a practice, introducing themselves and showing her the team’s clubhouse. Sammy, a softball player herself, has two younger brothers, including one with a serious medical condition. The Ohio State softball team warmly welcomes Sammy as a Buckeye.

After the welcoming ceremony, the scrimmage will start approximately at 1:45 p.m. with the Ohio State squad split into three groups. All three pitchers will have the opportunity to throw while field players will rotate through the batting lineup.
